Postoperative care after circumcision?

Hello doctor, I underwent circumcision surgery, and on the same day, my penile shaft became engorged and swollen (about three times its usual size).
Additionally, there is a soft, movable mass that feels somewhat painful when pressed.
As of today, one week post-surgery, there has been no significant reduction in size.
I would like to know what this is and if it will go away.
Thank you.

Hello: For swelling, you can consult a physician; it is mostly a hematoma.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience swelling and discomfort in the surgical area. The symptoms you describe—significant swelling of the penile shaft, the presence of a soft, movable lump, and mild pain upon pressure—are generally within the realm of expected postoperative reactions. However, it is essential to understand the underlying reasons for these symptoms and when to seek further medical advice.

Firstly, the swelling you are experiencing is likely due to the body's natural inflammatory response to surgery. When tissue is cut, the body sends blood and fluids to the area to promote healing, which can result in noticeable swelling. This is particularly common in the first week following surgery, as the body begins to repair itself. The fact that the swelling has not significantly decreased after a week is something to monitor, but it does not necessarily indicate a complication.

The soft, movable lump you mentioned could be a hematoma, which is a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels, or it could be a seroma, which is a buildup of clear fluid. Both conditions can occur after surgical procedures and may resolve on their own over time. However, if the lump continues to grow, becomes increasingly painful, or shows signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or discharge), it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Pain is also a common symptom after circumcision. It is important to manage this pain effectively, as it can affect your recovery. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort. However, if the pain is severe or persistent, it may warrant a follow-up with your surgeon.

In terms of what to expect moving forward, most swelling and discomfort should gradually subside over the next few weeks. It is essential to follow your surgeon's postoperative care instructions, which may include keeping the area clean, avoiding strenuous activities, and monitoring for any signs of complications.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical attention promptly:
1. Increased swelling or pain: If the swelling worsens or if you experience significant pain that is not relieved by medication.

2. Signs of infection: Redness, warmth, discharge, or fever can indicate an infection that requires treatment.

3. Changes in the lump: If the lump becomes larger, harder, or more painful, it should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

In conclusion, while some swelling and discomfort after circumcision are normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms do not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. They can provide you with the best advice tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
