Consultation for pain around the rib cage?

Hello Doctor, about two weeks ago, I started experiencing vague pain under my lower ribs and on the side of my chest (I don't recall any external trauma).
The pain is sometimes sharp, cramping, and occasionally tender to the touch.
I've noticed that this sensation becomes more pronounced when I wear a bra.
Additionally, three days ago, after being diagnosed with a cough, I began to experience similar pain in my lower right ribs.
I would like to ask what possible causes there might be for this, and I plan to see a doctor soon but am unsure which specialty would be most appropriate.
Thank you, Doctor.

Rib pain can be a complex issue, and understanding its causes is essential for determining the appropriate course of action. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing pain in the lower ribs and side of the chest, which has become more pronounced with certain movements and activities, such as wearing a bra. Additionally, you mentioned that the pain intensified after you started coughing, which could indicate a connection between your respiratory symptoms and the rib pain.

There are several potential causes for rib pain, and they can be broadly categorized into musculoskeletal issues, respiratory conditions, and other systemic problems. Here are some common causes to consider:
1. Musculoskeletal Issues:
- Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain, especially when moving or pressing on the affected area.

- Rib Fractures or Bruises: Even if you do not recall any trauma, rib fractures can occur from activities that put stress on the ribs, such as heavy lifting or intense coughing.

- Intercostal Muscle Strain: The muscles between the ribs can become strained due to sudden movements, heavy lifting, or even prolonged coughing, leading to pain.

2. Respiratory Conditions:
- Pleurisy: Inflammation of the pleura (the lining of the lungs) can cause sharp pain that worsens with breathing or coughing.

- Pneumonia or Lung Infections: These can cause referred pain to the ribs, especially if there is inflammation or irritation in the lung tissue.

3. Other Conditions:
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, conditions like acid reflux or gallbladder problems can cause pain that feels like it originates from the ribs.

- Nerve Compression or Irritation: Conditions such as a herniated disc in the thoracic spine can lead to nerve pain that radiates to the rib area.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional to obtain a proper diagnosis. Since your pain has been associated with coughing, it would be prudent to see a physician who specializes in respiratory issues, such as a pulmonologist. However, if the pain is primarily musculoskeletal, an orthopedic specialist or a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor may be more appropriate.

When you visit the doctor, be prepared to discuss your symptoms in detail, including when the pain started, any activities that exacerbate it, and any other symptoms you may be experiencing (such as cough, shortness of breath, or gastrointestinal issues). The doctor may perform a physical examination and could recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to rule out fractures or other underlying conditions.

In summary, rib pain can arise from various causes, and understanding the context of your symptoms is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment. Seeking medical attention promptly will help ensure that any serious conditions are ruled out and that you receive appropriate care for your pain.
