How long will the headache last after hitting the head?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my head injury.
I bumped the top of my head against a door, and for the first two to three days, I applied ice followed by heat.
There was no swelling at the impact site.
During the days immediately after the injury, I experienced significant pain, even waking up from it at night, and I felt somewhat mentally sluggish.
Gradually, I started to recover.
Now, ten months later, I sometimes experience poor circulation or sharp pain at the impact site when wearing glasses.
I would like to know how long pain typically lasts after a head injury.
Thank you for your assistance.

Head pain after a bump or trauma to the head can vary significantly in duration and intensity depending on several factors, including the severity of the injury, the individual's health status, and the specific area of the head that was impacted. In general, mild head injuries, such as those resulting from a bump against a door, may cause temporary discomfort that lasts from a few days to a couple of weeks. However, in some cases, symptoms can persist for months or even longer, especially if there are underlying issues such as post-concussion syndrome or other complications.

When a person experiences a head injury, the immediate response often includes symptoms like headache, dizziness, confusion, or even temporary cognitive changes, as you described feeling "dumber." These symptoms can be attributed to a concussion, which is a type of traumatic brain injury that affects brain function. While many people recover from concussions within a few weeks, some may experience prolonged symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties, which can last for months or longer.

In your case, the fact that you experienced pain for several days after the injury, followed by a gradual recovery, is typical for a mild head injury. However, the ongoing pain at the site of the impact, especially after ten months, raises some concerns. It's essential to consider that the brain and surrounding tissues can take time to heal, and sometimes, the effects of a concussion can linger. Factors such as stress, fatigue, and even changes in vision (like wearing glasses) can exacerbate headache symptoms.

If you are experiencing recurrent pain at the site of the injury, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional, particularly a neurologist or a specialist in sports medicine. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan, to rule out any structural issues or complications such as post-traumatic headaches, which can occur after a head injury.

In terms of treatment, management of post-traumatic headaches often involves a combination of approaches. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may help alleviate pain. Additionally, lifestyle modifications, including stress management techniques, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, can contribute to overall recovery. Physical therapy or cognitive rehabilitation may also be recommended if you continue to experience cognitive difficulties or persistent headaches.

In summary, while mild head injuries can lead to temporary pain that resolves within days to weeks, some individuals may experience prolonged symptoms. If your pain persists or worsens, seeking medical advice is crucial to ensure proper evaluation and management. Remember, every individual's recovery process is unique, and addressing any ongoing symptoms with a healthcare provider is the best course of action.
