Are you pregnant?

Hello Doctor, my menstrual cycle is usually between 32 to 36 days.
I had sexual intercourse three days before my predicted ovulation period, and during that time, the condom accidentally slipped off without me noticing, but there was no ejaculation inside.
When the predicted period arrived, my menstruation was delayed (I'm not sure if it's due to irregular sleep patterns), and I've been feeling a dull pain in my abdomen.
I've also been using the restroom frequently.
I'm wondering if this could be psychological, and is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? My previous menstrual cycles have always started right on the predicted day.

X, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/04

Hello, you should not be pregnant.
Wait for another week, and if your period still hasn't arrived, you can take a pregnancy test.
Wishing you good health.

It sounds like you're experiencing a lot of uncertainty and anxiety regarding the possibility of being pregnant, especially given the recent sexual encounter and the subsequent changes in your menstrual cycle. Let's break down your situation and provide some clarity.

First, it's important to understand how pregnancy occurs. Pregnancy typically happens when sperm fertilizes an egg, which can occur during unprotected sexual intercourse, especially around the time of ovulation. In your case, you mentioned that you had sexual intercourse a few days before your expected period, and although the condom slipped off, you did not ejaculate inside. This reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, but it does not eliminate it entirely. Sperm can sometimes be present in pre-ejaculate fluid, which could potentially lead to pregnancy if it comes into contact with the vaginal canal.

Your menstrual cycle of 32-36 days is relatively normal, but variations can occur due to various factors, including stress, changes in routine, diet, and overall health. The fact that your period is late could be attributed to these factors rather than pregnancy. Stress and anxiety can significantly impact your menstrual cycle, causing delays or irregularities. The symptoms you're experiencing, such as abdominal discomfort and increased urination, can also be related to anxiety or other non-pregnancy-related issues.

To determine if you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. It's best to wait until at least the first day of your missed period to take the test for the most accurate result. If you take the test too early, you may get a false negative result.

If the test is positive, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy and discuss your options moving forward. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be wise to consult with your doctor to explore other potential causes for the delay.

In the meantime, try to manage your stress levels. Engaging in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation can help alleviate anxiety. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can also support your overall well-being and potentially regulate your menstrual cycle.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances, there are also many other factors that could explain your late period and symptoms. Taking a pregnancy test will provide you with more definitive information, and regardless of the outcome, consulting with a healthcare professional can help you navigate your concerns and health moving forward. Remember, it's normal to feel anxious during this time, but taking proactive steps can help you feel more in control.
