Bone pain?

Since yesterday, I've been experiencing pain in the bone above my buttocks.
It hurts when I bend over, lean back, or lie flat.
I'm not sure if it's due to poor posture or if it could be related to an incident on the 16th of last month when a family member was riding a motorcycle and I didn't notice a pothole, causing a jolt.
That was when the pain started, but it went away after a few days.
Could this be the reason? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

It is possible that the pain is due to poor posture; it is advisable to observe the situation first.
If the pain persists, then it would be necessary to see a physician.

More Info

Hip pain can arise from a variety of causes, and understanding the underlying issues is crucial for effective treatment. Based on your description, it seems that your discomfort may be related to a combination of factors, including potential trauma from the motorcycle incident and possibly poor posture.

Potential Causes of Hip Pain
1. Trauma: The incident where you rode over a pothole could have caused a minor injury to the hip joint or surrounding muscles and ligaments. Even if you did not feel pain immediately after the incident, it is possible that soft tissue damage or inflammation developed later.

2. Muscle Strain: Activities that involve sudden movements or awkward positions can lead to muscle strains. The hip area is surrounded by several muscles, including the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and iliopsoas, which can become strained from overuse or improper movement.

3. Poor Posture: Sitting or standing with poor posture can lead to muscle imbalances and strain on the hip joint. If you frequently find yourself in positions that put undue stress on your hips, this could contribute to your pain.

4. Hip Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae (small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip joint) can cause pain, especially when moving the hip or lying down. This condition often results from repetitive motions or prolonged pressure on the hip.

5. Arthritis: While less likely given your age and the nature of your injury, hip osteoarthritis can cause pain and stiffness, particularly after periods of inactivity.

6. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the hip can be referred from other areas, such as the lower back or pelvis. Conditions like sciatica or lumbar disc issues can manifest as hip pain.

Recommended Remedies and Treatments
1. Rest and Ice: Initially, it’s important to rest the affected area and apply ice to reduce inflammation. Ice therapy can help alleviate pain and swelling, especially if the pain is acute.

2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can be beneficial. A physical therapist can assess your condition and develop a tailored exercise program to strengthen the hip muscles, improve flexibility, and correct any postural issues.

3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.

4. Gentle Stretching and Strengthening: Incorporating gentle stretches and strengthening exercises can help improve mobility and support the hip joint. Focus on exercises that target the hip flexors, glutes, and core muscles.

5. Posture Correction: Pay attention to your posture during daily activities. Ergonomic adjustments to your workspace or using supportive seating can help alleviate strain on your hips.

6. Consult a Specialist: If the pain persists or worsens, it may be wise to consult an orthopedic specialist. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRIs, to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

Conclusion
In summary, your hip pain could be attributed to a combination of trauma from the motorcycle incident and possibly poor posture. It’s essential to listen to your body and take appropriate measures to manage your pain. If symptoms persist, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Remember, early intervention can often prevent more serious issues down the line, allowing you to return to your normal activities, including any physical training or exercise you wish to pursue.
