Is It Just a Skin Irritation or Something More Serious? - Urology

Is this just a simple abrasion or is it inflammation?

I have red spots on the glans and the inner side of the foreskin, and I'm worried that I might have a sexually transmitted infection or some serious condition.
However, these spots are not very noticeable when I am erect; they only become apparent upon close inspection.
There is no stinging or discomfort when I touch them, and my urination is normal.
The inner side of the foreskin has a small localized red spot, and the glans appears to have what looks like a broken skin.
I would like to know if these symptoms can heal on their own.
I would also appreciate your assistance with this matter.

Hello: If there has been unprotected sexual intercourse, it is recommended to seek medical attention.
If not, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene for 2-3 days should lead to improvement.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to skin issues, particularly those involving redness, irritation, or unusual spots, it’s essential to approach the situation with caution and a thorough understanding of potential causes. Based on your description of red spots on the glans and inner foreskin, along with the absence of pain or discomfort during urination, there are several possibilities to consider.

Firstly, the symptoms you describe could be indicative of a benign condition such as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans. This can be caused by various factors, including irritation from soaps, lotions, or even friction. In some cases, it may also result from a yeast infection, particularly if there is a history of diabetes or if you have been on antibiotics recently, which can disrupt the normal flora of the skin.

Another possibility is that the red spots could be related to a dermatological condition such as psoriasis or eczema, which can manifest in various forms on the genital area. These conditions are often characterized by red, scaly patches and can sometimes be mistaken for more serious issues.

While sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or genital warts could also present with similar symptoms, the absence of pain, itching, or discomfort during urination makes these less likely. However, it is crucial to remember that some STIs can be asymptomatic, especially in their early stages.

Regarding your concern about whether these symptoms will resolve on their own, it is possible for mild irritations to improve with time, especially if they are due to transient factors like irritation or minor infections. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to rule out infections or other conditions.

In terms of treatment, if the irritation is mild, maintaining good hygiene and avoiding potential irritants (such as harsh soaps or lotions) can be beneficial. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation, but it should be used sparingly and not for extended periods without medical advice. If a fungal infection is suspected, antifungal creams may be necessary.

It is also advisable to avoid sexual activity until you have a clearer understanding of the cause of your symptoms, as this can prevent potential transmission of infections and allow for proper healing.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may not indicate a severe condition, it is essential to monitor them closely. If you notice any changes, such as increased redness, swelling, or the development of pain, you should consult a healthcare professional promptly. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention is key to managing skin conditions effectively.
