Wisdom teeth issues related to orthodontics?
Hello, I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth extracted 4.5 years ago, and now I want to straighten my teeth.
I would like to move my teeth back without undergoing any additional extractions.
I would like to ask the doctor if it is still possible to utilize the space where the previously impacted wisdom teeth were located to move my teeth back, or if too much time has passed and the space has healed, making it impossible to move my teeth back.
If it is possible, can both clear aligners and traditional braces achieve this?

Hello: The space for tooth alignment requires a lateral cephalometric X-ray for assessment, and calculations must be performed to determine the feasibility.
Even if there is sufficient alveolar bone space, it does not necessarily mean that the entire mandibular dentition can be retracted, or that a significant improvement in the appearance of an anterior open bite can be achieved.
In some cases, combined orthognathic surgery may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
It is recommended to consult directly with an orthodontic specialist for a more definitive answer.

After the extraction of wisdom teeth, particularly horizontally impacted ones, the potential for utilizing the space they occupied for orthodontic purposes can be complex. In your case, since you had all four wisdom teeth removed 4.5 years ago, it is important to consider several factors regarding the healing process and the possibility of orthodontic treatment.
When wisdom teeth are extracted, the surrounding bone and gum tissue undergo a healing process. Over time, the space left by the extracted teeth can fill in with bone and soft tissue, which may limit the ability to move adjacent teeth into that space. The extent of this healing can vary significantly from person to person and depends on factors such as age, oral hygiene, and the specific anatomy of the jaw.
To determine if the space from your extracted wisdom teeth can still be utilized for orthodontic treatment, a thorough evaluation is necessary. This typically involves taking a lateral cephalometric X-ray and possibly a 3D imaging study to assess the current state of your dental arch and the available space. An orthodontist will analyze these images to see if there is sufficient space to retract your teeth without the need for further extractions.
Regarding your question about whether both clear aligners (like Invisalign) and traditional braces can achieve this, the answer is that both methods have their advantages and limitations. Traditional braces are often more effective for complex movements and can apply greater force to move teeth into the desired position. They may be better suited for cases where significant movement is required or when the dental arch needs to be expanded or contracted.
On the other hand, clear aligners can be a more aesthetic option and are often preferred by patients for their comfort and convenience. However, they may not be as effective for certain types of movements, especially if significant space closure is needed. If the space from your wisdom teeth has healed significantly, it may be challenging for clear aligners alone to achieve the desired results.
In conclusion, while it may be possible to utilize the space from your extracted wisdom teeth for orthodontic treatment, it is essential to consult with an orthodontic specialist. They will provide a comprehensive assessment of your dental situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan based on your specific needs. This may involve traditional braces, clear aligners, or even a combination of both, depending on the complexity of your case and the amount of space available for tooth movement.
