Drug interactions

I have onychomycosis and underwent liver function tests at the hospital, which came back normal.
The doctor prescribed Terbinafine, to be taken once a day.
I would like to inquire about potential drug interactions between this medication and the prostate medication Avodart (Dutasteride) that I am currently taking, as well as the smoking cessation medication Coenzyme Q10.
If there are any interactions, how long should I space them apart? Thank you for your response!

Hello! You can inquire at the consultation window on the medication bag or ask your original treating physician during your follow-up visit.
Thank you.

When considering the potential drug interactions between terbinafine, Avodart (dutasteride), and smoking cessation medications, it is essential to understand the pharmacological profiles of each medication and how they may interact with one another.

Terbinafine is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat fungal infections, particularly those affecting the nails and skin. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and in rare cases, liver function abnormalities. Given that you have had a liver function test that returned normal results, it is crucial to continue monitoring liver function while on this medication, especially if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Avodart (Dutasteride) is a medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is involved in prostate growth. Side effects may include sexual dysfunction, gynecomastia, and potential liver enzyme alterations, although these are generally rare.

Smoking cessation medications, such as varenicline (Chantix) or bupropion (Zyban), are designed to help individuals quit smoking by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Varenicline acts on nicotinic receptors in the brain to reduce the pleasurable effects of smoking, while bupropion is an antidepressant that also helps with cravings.

Drug Interactions
1. Terbinafine and Avodart: There are no significant direct interactions reported between terbinafine and Avodart. However, both medications can affect liver enzymes, so it is advisable to monitor liver function periodically, especially if you are taking other medications that may also impact liver health.

2. Terbinafine and Smoking Cessation Medications: Again, there are no major interactions between terbinafine and common smoking cessation medications. However, if you are using bupropion, it is important to note that bupropion can lower the seizure threshold, and if you have any underlying conditions that may predispose you to seizures, this should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

3. Avodart and Smoking Cessation Medications: There are no significant interactions between Avodart and smoking cessation medications. However, as with any medication, it is essential to monitor for any unusual side effects or changes in health status.

Recommendations
- Monitoring: Since you are taking multiple medications, it is crucial to monitor for any side effects or unusual symptoms. If you notice any changes in your health, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

- Timing of Doses: There is no specific requirement to space out the doses of these medications. However, it is always a good practice to take medications as prescribed and to maintain a consistent schedule to optimize their effectiveness.

- Consultation: If you have concerns about potential interactions or side effects, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or a pharmacist. They can provide personalized advice based on your complete medical history and current medication regimen.

In conclusion, while there are no significant interactions between terbinafine, Avodart, and smoking cessation medications, it is essential to remain vigilant about monitoring your health and liver function while on these medications. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns or symptoms you may experience during your treatment.
