Postoperative issues following penile papule surgery?
Hello, doctor.
Yesterday, I noticed a small lump on my penis that resembled a sebaceous cyst, so I went to the hospital for surgical removal.
After the suturing, today while changing the dressing and applying medication, I observed that the skin on one side of the sutures appears normal in color, while the other side is darker and slightly swollen.
I would like to ask if this is a normal postoperative phenomenon? Is there a possibility that this could be a sign of tissue necrosis?

Hello: You may return for a follow-up visit.
Please pay attention to wound care; most of the swelling and bruising is common after surgery.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing penile cyst removal surgery, it is common to have concerns about the healing process and any potential complications. Based on your description, you have noticed a difference in the appearance of the skin around the sutures, with one side appearing normal and the other side appearing darker and slightly swollen.
Firstly, it is important to understand that post-operative healing can vary significantly from person to person. The appearance of the skin around the surgical site can change as it heals, and some discoloration is not uncommon. However, there are several factors to consider regarding the darkened area you are observing:
1. Normal Healing Process: After surgery, the body goes through a healing process that can involve inflammation, which may cause swelling and changes in color. Initially, the area may appear red or pink, but as healing progresses, it can sometimes take on a darker hue due to bruising or increased blood flow to the area.
2. Possible Complications: While some discoloration can be normal, a significant change in color, especially if it appears black, could indicate a problem. Skin that is turning black may suggest necrosis (tissue death), which can occur if the blood supply to that area is compromised. This can happen due to tight sutures, infection, or other factors.
3. Signs of Infection: Along with discoloration, you should also monitor for other signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus or drainage, and fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Suture Reaction: Sometimes, the body can react to the sutures themselves, leading to localized inflammation or discoloration. If the sutures are non-absorbable, they may need to be removed by your healthcare provider after a certain period.
5. Follow-Up Care: It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, including how to clean the area and when to change dressings. If you have any concerns about the appearance of the surgical site or if you notice any changes, it is advisable to contact your surgeon or healthcare provider for an evaluation.
In summary, while some discoloration and swelling can be part of the normal healing process, the specific changes you are observing warrant careful monitoring. If the darkened area continues to spread, becomes painful, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is important to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment. They may need to examine the area to determine if any intervention is necessary, such as adjusting the sutures, treating an infection, or addressing any potential necrosis. Always prioritize your health and do not hesitate to seek medical advice when in doubt.
