Pain upon palpation in the right upper quadrant?

Hello Dr.
Chen: Over the past week (starting around Monday), I have noticed a painful spot just below the right rib cage in the upper right abdomen.
A few days ago, I felt more pain when stretching, but today it feels slightly better, although I still feel pain when pressing on it.
After doing some research, it seems that this area is related to the liver and gallbladder.
Additionally, during a previous health check, an abdominal ultrasound indicated a gallbladder polyp (less than 1 cm), which makes me a bit concerned.
I am unsure whether the pain I feel when pressing is due to a muscle strain or if there is an issue with the internal organs.
I would like to hear your opinion on this.
Thank you!

The posture-related issue is likely a localized muscle strain.
Pay attention to the posture when lifting heavy objects, apply local heat therapy, use analgesics, and monitor the condition.

Understanding pain in the right upper abdomen can be quite concerning, especially when it is accompanied by a history of gallbladder polyps. The area you are describing, located just beneath the rib cage on the right side, is indeed associated with several important organs, including the liver, gallbladder, and parts of the digestive system.
Given your symptoms, there are several potential causes for the pain you are experiencing. One possibility is musculoskeletal pain, which can occur due to muscle strain or injury, especially if you have been engaging in physical activities or stretching that may have overexerted the muscles in that area. This type of pain is often localized and can be reproduced by pressing on the affected area, which seems to align with your experience of tenderness upon palpation.

Another consideration is the possibility of gallbladder-related issues. Since you mentioned a previous ultrasound that identified a gallbladder polyp, it is essential to monitor this condition. While most gallbladder polyps are benign and do not cause symptoms, they can sometimes lead to complications, especially if they grow larger or if there are other underlying gallbladder diseases, such as cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) or gallstones. Symptoms of gallbladder issues typically include pain in the right upper quadrant, especially after eating fatty meals, nausea, and sometimes jaundice if there is a blockage.

Additionally, liver conditions could also be a factor. While liver disease often presents with more systemic symptoms (like fatigue, jaundice, or swelling), localized pain can occur, particularly if there is inflammation or other pathology affecting the liver.

Given your concerns, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. A thorough physical examination is crucial, and additional imaging studies, such as an abdominal ultrasound or possibly a CT scan, may be warranted to assess the gallbladder and liver more closely. Blood tests to evaluate liver function and check for any signs of infection or inflammation could also provide valuable insights.

In the meantime, it may be helpful to monitor your symptoms closely. Take note of any changes in the pain, such as its intensity, duration, and any associated symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits. This information can be very useful for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your pain.

Lastly, while anxiety can exacerbate the perception of pain, it is essential to address any physical health concerns first. If your pain persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and understanding the root cause of your symptoms is the first step toward effective management and treatment.
