Labial swelling

Hello Doctor, I have been using panty liners recently, but I haven't changed them very frequently.
Once I returned home, I felt a lot of itching in my genital area.
Upon inspection, I noticed redness and swelling near the vaginal opening.
After this redness appeared, I also noticed an unusual discharge staining my underwear.
However, after showering, the itching subsides, but it starts again the following evening.
I would like to know if the prolonged use of the panty liner without changing it could be the cause of the redness, itching, and unusual discharge, or if there could be other possibilities? What steps should I take to improve this situation, and what is the medical term for my symptoms?

Warfarin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/11/03

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it may be related to using the panty liner for too long.
I recommend visiting a gynecologist for an examination.
Wishing you good health.

Labial swelling, particularly when accompanied by itching and unusual discharge, can be concerning and may indicate several underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems likely that your symptoms could be related to irritation or an infection, possibly exacerbated by the use of sanitary pads.

Possible Causes
1. Irritation from Sanitary Pads: Prolonged use of sanitary pads without changing them frequently can lead to irritation of the skin in the genital area. The materials in the pads, combined with moisture and heat, can create an environment conducive to irritation or infection.

2. Yeast Infection: The symptoms you describe, including itching, redness, and discharge, are common signs of a yeast infection. This type of infection is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of fungus that normally exists in small amounts in the body.

3. Bacterial Vaginosis: This condition occurs when there is an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina. Symptoms can include itching, a fishy odor, and unusual discharge.

4. Contact Dermatitis: This is an allergic reaction to substances that come into contact with the skin, such as fragrances or chemicals in sanitary products. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and itching.

5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Some STIs can cause similar symptoms, including itching and discharge. If you are sexually active, it is important to consider this possibility.

Symptoms to Monitor
- Type of Discharge: Note the color, consistency, and odor of any discharge. For example, a thick, white discharge often indicates a yeast infection, while a thin, gray discharge may suggest bacterial vaginosis.

- Duration of Symptoms: If the symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, it is crucial to seek medical attention.

- Associated Symptoms: Fever, severe pain, or systemic symptoms could indicate a more serious infection requiring immediate medical care.

Recommended Actions
1. Change Sanitary Pads Regularly: Aim to change your pads every 4-6 hours, or more frequently if they become wet or soiled. This will help reduce moisture and irritation.

2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the genital area clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soap and avoid douching or using scented products that can irritate the area.

3. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to allow for better air circulation.

4. Consider Over-the-Counter Treatments: If you suspect a yeast infection, antifungal creams or suppositories are available without a prescription. However, it’s best to consult a healthcare provider before starting any treatment.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to see a doctor. They can perform a physical examination, take samples if necessary, and provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Conclusion
Your symptoms may be indicative of irritation from the sanitary pads, a yeast infection, or another condition. It is important to take proactive steps to manage your hygiene and monitor your symptoms closely. If the situation does not improve or if you have concerns about STIs or other infections, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms will help ensure you receive the best care possible.
