Can Dupuytren's contracture be cured?

Dear Dr.
Cheng,
I have severe cracking on my right palm, especially worsening in cold weather.
People say this is "wealthy hand" and that there is no cure for it.
Is that really the case? Is there any way to improve or treat it for healing? Please help clarify this for me.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Dayuan

Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology

In winter, due to the dry and cold climate, hands are more prone to cracking and peeling.
Enhancing moisture retention is the best way to care for hands and prevent dryness and peeling.
Choose a hand cream with good moisturizing properties or petroleum jelly, and apply it immediately after drying your hands.
Even if you haven't washed your hands, reapply every three to four hours to maintain hydration.
Additionally, try to avoid contact with water, alcohol, cleaning agents, irritants, or soap.
If contact is unavoidable, be sure to wear gloves (preferably a cotton inner layer and a rubber outer layer).
In severe cases, consult a dermatologist for treatment.

Rich Hand Condition, often referred to as "富貴手" in Mandarin, is a colloquial term that describes a condition characterized by dry, cracked skin on the palms and fingers. This condition is commonly associated with environmental factors, such as cold weather, and can also be exacerbated by frequent hand washing, exposure to harsh chemicals, or underlying skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. While some may believe that this condition is untreatable, there are indeed various options for management and improvement.

Understanding Rich Hand Condition
The term "Rich Hand" does not refer to a specific medical diagnosis but rather describes the appearance and symptoms of the hands. The skin on the palms may become dry, cracked, and sometimes painful, leading to discomfort and a decrease in the quality of life. This condition can be particularly distressing during colder months when the skin tends to lose moisture more rapidly.

Treatment Options
1. Moisturization: The most fundamental approach to treating dry, cracked hands is regular and effective moisturization. Using thick creams or ointments that contain ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, or petroleum jelly can help lock in moisture. Applying these products immediately after washing hands or bathing can be particularly beneficial.

2. Avoiding Irritants: Identifying and avoiding irritants is crucial. This includes using mild, fragrance-free soaps and wearing gloves when using cleaning products or when exposed to cold weather.
3. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water can also help maintain skin moisture from the inside out.

4. Humidifiers: Using a humidifier in your home, especially during winter months, can help maintain moisture in the air and prevent skin from drying out.

5. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter creams containing urea or lactic acid can help exfoliate and soften the skin. In more severe cases, a dermatologist may prescribe stronger topical treatments or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

6. Lifestyle Adjustments: Adopting a lifestyle that includes a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support skin health. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and flaxseeds, can improve skin hydration.

7. Medical Intervention: If the condition persists despite home treatment, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist. They can assess for any underlying skin conditions that may be contributing to the problem and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include prescription medications or specialized therapies.

Conclusion
In conclusion, while the term "富貴手" may suggest that the condition is beyond treatment, there are numerous effective strategies to manage and improve the symptoms associated with dry, cracked hands. With proper care, including moisturization, avoidance of irritants, and possibly medical intervention, individuals can achieve significant relief and restore the health of their skin. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms, it is advisable to seek professional medical advice to tailor a treatment plan that suits your specific needs.
