Arm pain
I sell fish in the market, and after long-term handling of fish and using various fish-cutting knives, my right hand is almost paralyzed.
A couple of days ago, a friend took me for a folk therapy session, where he said my entire right hand felt cold and had poor blood circulation.
They performed cupping therapy on me, and now my arm has dark purple marks in circles.
I have some concerns about this treatment, and with long working hours, I really can't find time for rehabilitation.
What is the best way for me to take care of my right hand to prevent it from becoming unusable?

Dr. Chen Xianchang reply Rehabilitation
Hello, sir: Thank you for your inquiry.
I would like to respond to your question and provide the following suggestions: 1.
Generally speaking, you may be experiencing muscle overuse, leading to chronic tendon strain or even thickened ligaments compressing nerves.
2.
It is important to investigate the underlying cause; do not neglect medical evaluation due to a busy work schedule, as this could delay treatment, especially since your right hand feels cool, which may indicate a circulation issue.
I recommend consulting with a rehabilitation specialist or a neurologist for further examination and treatment.
Lastly, I wish you peace and happiness.

When dealing with arm pain resulting from heavy lifting, especially in a physically demanding job like selling fish, it's essential to adopt effective strategies for relief and prevention. Your experience with traditional therapies like cupping may provide temporary relief, but it's crucial to understand the underlying issues and implement a comprehensive approach to manage your symptoms effectively.
Understanding the Pain
The pain you're experiencing in your right arm is likely due to repetitive strain injuries, which are common in occupations that require heavy lifting and repetitive motions. These injuries can lead to conditions such as tendinitis, bursitis, or even nerve compression syndromes. The dark purple marks from cupping indicate that there was some level of muscle tension or blood flow issues, but this method alone may not address the root cause of your pain.
Effective Strategies for Relief
1. Rest and Recovery: It's vital to allow your arm some time to recover. If possible, take breaks during your work to rest your arm. Avoid heavy lifting or repetitive motions that exacerbate the pain.
2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain. Use an ice pack for 15-20 minutes several times a day, especially after work.
3. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility and reduce tension in your arm and shoulder muscles. Strengthening exercises can help build resilience in the muscles surrounding your joints, reducing the risk of injury. Focus on exercises that target the forearm, wrist, and shoulder.
4. Ergonomic Adjustments: Evaluate your lifting techniques and the tools you use. Ensure that you are using proper lifting techniques—bend your knees and keep your back straight. Consider using tools that can help reduce strain, such as carts or dollies for transporting heavy loads.
5. Physical Therapy: While you mentioned time constraints, seeking professional help from a physical therapist can be invaluable. They can provide tailored exercises and treatments that fit your schedule and address your specific needs.
6. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication, especially if you have other health conditions.
7. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods (like fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids) can support overall muscle and joint health.
8. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Stress can exacerbate pain perception. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help manage stress and improve your overall well-being.
Long-Term Considerations
If your symptoms persist despite these strategies, it may be necessary to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies or further interventions to rule out more serious conditions. Additionally, consider discussing your work environment with your employer to explore options for reducing physical strain, such as job rotation or ergonomic assessments.
In conclusion, while traditional therapies like cupping may offer some relief, a multifaceted approach that includes rest, proper technique, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments will be more effective in managing your arm pain and preventing future injuries. Prioritizing your health is essential, especially in a physically demanding job.
