Drug interactions
I have been taking pre-exposure prophylaxis for over six months.
I started taking DHC Vitamin C and B in mid-November.
Originally, I took the vitamins in the morning and the pre-exposure prophylaxis before bed.
Today, I accidentally took them at the same time.
After researching online, I found that taking pre-exposure prophylaxis and Vitamin C simultaneously may inhibit estrogen, increasing the risk of side effects.
I would like to know if this means it could affect the contraceptive effectiveness?

When it comes to the interaction between Vitamin C and birth control pills, there are several important factors to consider. First, let's clarify what birth control pills do. They primarily work by delivering hormones (usually a combination of estrogen and progestin) that prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining to prevent pregnancy.
Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including the immune system, collagen synthesis, and as an antioxidant. While Vitamin C is generally considered safe and beneficial for health, there has been some concern regarding its interaction with hormonal contraceptives.
Research has shown that high doses of Vitamin C may potentially affect the metabolism of certain hormones, including estrogen. Some studies suggest that Vitamin C could theoretically increase the metabolism of estrogen, which might lead to lower levels of this hormone in the body. However, the evidence is not conclusive, and the clinical significance of this interaction remains unclear.
The concern about Vitamin C affecting the efficacy of birth control pills primarily arises from the idea that if estrogen levels are altered, it could potentially reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive method. However, most studies indicate that normal dietary intake of Vitamin C does not significantly impact the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. The potential interaction is more of a concern with high doses of Vitamin C, typically above what one would consume through a balanced diet or standard supplementation.
In your case, taking DHC Vitamin C along with your birth control pills is unlikely to pose a significant risk, especially if you are not consuming excessively high doses of Vitamin C. The typical recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C is around 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men, with higher doses sometimes recommended for specific health conditions or during illness. If you are taking a standard dose of Vitamin C, it should not interfere with the effectiveness of your birth control pills.
However, if you are concerned about the timing of your Vitamin C intake and your birth control pills, it may be prudent to separate the doses by a few hours. This can help alleviate any anxiety you may have regarding potential interactions.
It's also important to note that if you experience any unusual side effects or changes in your menstrual cycle while taking both Vitamin C and birth control pills, you should consult your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current medications.
In summary, while there is some theoretical concern regarding high doses of Vitamin C potentially affecting estrogen levels and, by extension, the effectiveness of birth control pills, the evidence does not strongly support this interaction at normal supplementation levels. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about all supplements and medications you are taking is essential for ensuring your health and the effectiveness of your contraceptive method.
