Sciatica
I would like to ask the doctor about my condition.
Last year, around February and March, I developed sciatica in my right leg due to poor sitting posture.
After examination and treatment by a physician, the severe pain has subsided, and I can resume my normal activities.
However, I have gradually noticed that I experience some soreness and numbness when standing or walking for extended periods, which I didn't have before.
Initially, I also experienced numbness in the soles of my feet, but that has resolved.
Now, I only feel soreness when standing, but it’s not severe enough to prevent me from walking.
Can traditional Chinese medicine cure this condition? Additionally, I am concerned about participating in the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage, which I missed last year.
I worry that excessive walking might worsen my condition.
Is it advisable for me to participate in such a lengthy event?

Hello, it is important to determine whether sciatica is caused by compression in the spinal region, as the treatment would be completely different, or if it is simply due to overexertion and fatigue.
Traditional Chinese medicine may be effective, but it depends on the underlying cause.

Managing sciatica can be a challenging endeavor, and many individuals seek various treatment modalities to alleviate their symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been gaining attention for its potential benefits in managing conditions like sciatica.
Sciatica is characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It often results from a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, or other conditions that compress the nerve. While Western medicine typically addresses sciatica through physical therapy, medications, or surgery, TCM offers a different perspective, focusing on restoring balance and harmony within the body.
In TCM, sciatica is often viewed as a result of "Qi" (vital energy) stagnation or blood stasis in the meridians. Treatment modalities may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage). Acupuncture, in particular, has been studied for its effectiveness in pain management. Research has shown that acupuncture can stimulate the release of endorphins and improve blood circulation, which may help alleviate pain and promote healing.
For your specific situation, since you have experienced improvement in your symptoms but still have lingering discomfort, TCM could be a beneficial adjunct to your treatment plan. A qualified TCM practitioner would assess your condition through a comprehensive evaluation, which may include examining your tongue and pulse, to determine the underlying imbalances. Based on this assessment, they may recommend a personalized treatment plan that could include acupuncture sessions to relieve pain and improve mobility, as well as herbal remedies to support your recovery.
Regarding your concern about participating in long walks, such as the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage, it is essential to listen to your body. If you experience discomfort or fatigue, it may be wise to take breaks or modify your participation to avoid exacerbating your symptoms. Engaging in moderate activity can be beneficial, but overexertion could lead to a setback. If you decide to participate, consider incorporating stretching exercises and ensuring you wear supportive footwear to minimize strain on your legs and back.
In summary, TCM can be a valuable component in managing sciatica, particularly for those seeking holistic approaches. It is advisable to consult with a licensed TCM practitioner who can tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs. Additionally, always communicate with your healthcare provider about any complementary therapies you wish to pursue, ensuring a coordinated approach to your health management.
