The corpora cavernosa appears slightly swollen, resembling a ring around the penis?
Dear Doctor: I had a circumcision when I was young.
Recently, I noticed that the area of my penis seems different from before.
I'm not sure if this is normal or if there is an actual injury.
The skin below the glans appears slightly swollen compared to the skin closer to my abdomen, forming a small ring.
It doesn't hurt when I press on it; it feels soft.
However, I later noticed that when I press on the swollen area near the base of the glans, I can feel a small, thin structure that feels like a bone, running horizontally from the left side to the middle, right at the edge of the ring.
The right side doesn't seem to have this structure; I'm not sure if I just didn't feel it or if it's not there.
What could this issue be? Will it heal on its own? Thank you.

Swelling in the penis can be concerning, especially if it appears suddenly or changes in appearance. Based on your description, it seems that you have noticed some localized swelling near the glans (the head of the penis) and that it does not cause pain or discomfort when pressed. There are several potential causes for this type of swelling, and it is important to consider them carefully.
1. Normal Anatomical Variations: Sometimes, what may appear as swelling could simply be a normal anatomical variation. The penis has various structures, including blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, which can sometimes create the appearance of swelling, especially if there is a change in blood flow or if the tissue is slightly engorged.
2. Lymphatic or Vascular Issues: The penis has a rich supply of blood vessels and lymphatic channels. Swelling can occur due to lymphatic fluid accumulation (lymphedema) or increased blood flow. If you have been more physically active or engaged in sexual activity recently, this could lead to temporary swelling.
3. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans), posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), or other infections can cause localized swelling. These conditions may be accompanied by redness, itching, or discharge, but not always. Since you mentioned that you had a circumcision, the risk of certain infections may be lower, but it is still possible.
4. Peyronie's Disease: This condition involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can lead to curvature and swelling. The "bone-like" structure you felt could be related to this condition, especially if it is associated with any changes in the shape of the penis during erection.
5. Cysts or Benign Growths: Sometimes, benign cysts or growths can develop in the penile tissue. These are usually harmless and may not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or concern.
6. Trauma or Injury: If there has been any recent trauma or injury to the area, even if minor, it could result in localized swelling. This could be from vigorous activity or even from an awkward position during sleep.
Given that you do not experience pain and the swelling is soft, it is possible that this could resolve on its own. However, it is crucial to monitor the situation. If the swelling persists, increases, or if you develop any additional symptoms (such as pain, discharge, or changes in urination), it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
In summary, while the swelling you describe may not be immediately alarming, it is essential to keep an eye on it and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination, possibly order imaging studies, and provide a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan if necessary. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your health.
