Medication Consultation
Hello, doctor.
I started seeing a dermatologist for acne treatment last July.
The clinic prescribed me oral medications, Doxycycline and Spironolactone, and a topical medication, Clindamycin gel.
My last menstrual period ended on January 14, 2024, and I discovered I was pregnant on February 15, 2024.
This year, I picked up my medications on January 10 and February 5, receiving a seven-day supply each time, taking them twice daily.
Since I noticed that my regular menstrual period did not come, I stopped taking the medication, and I currently have three days' worth left.
I found online that Doxycycline can be harmful to the fetus, which has made me very anxious.
I wonder if you have any thoughts on this.

Hello, the grading is not at level X, which only has a slight impact.
If you want to conceive, it should be possible, but starting now, you should stop eating it.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that is classified as a Category D medication by the FDA, which means there is evidence of risk to the fetus based on human data, but the potential benefits may warrant use in pregnant women despite the risks. This classification is particularly concerning during the first trimester of pregnancy when fetal organs are developing.
The use of Doxycycline during early pregnancy can lead to several potential adverse effects on the developing fetus. One of the most significant concerns is its impact on bone and dental development. Tetracyclines can bind to calcium in developing bones and teeth, leading to discoloration and potential growth issues. This is particularly critical during the first trimester when the fetal skeleton is forming.
Given your timeline, if you were taking Doxycycline before you confirmed your pregnancy, it is understandable to feel anxious. However, the actual risk of significant harm may depend on the dosage and duration of use. Since you mentioned that you took the medication for a limited time and have since stopped upon realizing you might be pregnant, it is important to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and health history.
In terms of your concerns about the medications you were prescribed for acne, it is essential to weigh the risks and benefits. If the acne treatment is necessary for your mental or physical health, your doctor may consider alternative medications that are safer during pregnancy. For instance, topical treatments may be preferred over systemic medications like Doxycycline.
Additionally, you mentioned that you were also prescribed spironolactone, which is another medication that is not recommended during pregnancy due to its potential effects on fetal development. It is crucial to communicate openly with your dermatologist or obstetrician about all medications you are taking and any concerns you have regarding their safety during pregnancy.
As for your anxiety about the potential effects of Doxycycline on your pregnancy, it is important to remember that many women have taken medications unknowingly during early pregnancy and have had healthy pregnancies and babies. The best course of action is to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider, who can monitor your pregnancy closely and provide reassurance.
In summary, while Doxycycline does pose risks during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, the extent of those risks can vary based on individual circumstances. It is vital to consult with your healthcare provider to assess your situation, consider alternative treatments for your acne, and ensure the best possible outcome for you and your baby. Regular prenatal care and open communication with your healthcare team will be key in navigating your pregnancy safely.
