Desire for morning erections?
Hello, doctor.
I am 15 years old and have not experienced any morning erections since the fifth grade, and now I am in the third year of junior high school.
When I was younger, I would always have morning erections when I woke up for school.
During the summer after sixth grade, when I transitioned to seventh grade, I had a long break due to COVID-19 and would stay up playing until 5 AM every day.
However, starting from the second year of junior high, I began going to bed at 11 PM and waking up at 6:30 AM.
Now that I am in the third year of junior high, I still have not experienced any morning erections.
I would like to know if this is related to my irregular sleep schedule during seventh grade.
Is it normal that I still have not had any morning erections even after returning to a regular sleep schedule? This issue has been troubling me for a long time, and I have searched online for reasons for the disappearance of morning erections, but none seem to match my situation.
Additionally, I would like to know if not having morning erections for such a long time could have any effects.
Does this count as a sexual dysfunction? Furthermore, I have a condition of phimosis (the glans cannot be exposed when the penis is erect, but I can push it down with my hand).
I would like to know if this could affect the growth of my penis, as it seems like it has not developed at all.
I hope you can clarify these concerns that have troubled me for years, and I would also like to know if there are any methods to encourage morning erections.

Hello: Morning erections vary from person to person; not everyone experiences them.
It's important to pay attention to rest and exercise.
If you tend to drink too little water, I recommend increasing your fluid intake.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding morning erections, also known as nocturnal penile tumescence, is an important aspect of male sexual health, particularly during the teenage years. Morning erections are a normal physiological response that occurs during the REM (rapid eye movement) phase of sleep, and they can happen multiple times throughout the night. For many boys, experiencing these erections is a sign of healthy sexual function and hormonal activity.
In your case, it's understandable to feel concerned about the absence of morning erections, especially since you mentioned that you experienced them regularly in the past. There are several factors that could contribute to the changes you've noticed:
1. Sleep Patterns: You mentioned that your sleep schedule changed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with late nights and irregular sleep patterns. Sleep is crucial for hormonal balance and overall health. Disrupted sleep can affect testosterone levels, which may influence the occurrence of morning erections. Since you have since returned to a more regular sleep schedule, it may take some time for your body to readjust.
2. Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors, including stress and anxiety, can also impact sexual function. If you are feeling anxious about your sexual health or other aspects of life, this could potentially affect your body's physiological responses.
3. Hormonal Changes: During adolescence, hormonal fluctuations are common. Testosterone levels can vary, and this can influence sexual function, including the frequency of morning erections. If you are concerned about your hormonal levels, it may be beneficial to discuss this with a healthcare provider.
4. Physical Health: General health plays a significant role in sexual function. Factors such as diet, exercise, and overall physical fitness can impact hormonal levels and sexual health. Ensuring you maintain a healthy lifestyle can support your sexual health.
Regarding your concerns about phimosis (the condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted), it is important to note that while it may not directly affect penile growth, it can lead to complications such as infections or discomfort. If you are experiencing issues with phimosis, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on whether treatment is necessary and what options are available.
As for the absence of morning erections, it is not necessarily indicative of a sexual dysfunction, especially if you are still in your teenage years. Many factors can influence this, and it may not be a cause for concern. However, if you continue to feel anxious or if you notice other changes in your sexual health, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can conduct a thorough evaluation and provide personalized advice.
To encourage morning erections, consider the following tips:
- Maintain a Healthy Sleep Schedule: Aim for consistent sleep patterns, ensuring you get enough rest each night.
- Manage Stress: Engage in activities that help reduce stress, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.
- Stay Physically Active: Regular physical activity can improve blood circulation and overall health, which may positively impact sexual function.
- Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can support hormonal health.
In conclusion, while the absence of morning erections can be concerning, it is often influenced by various factors, including sleep patterns, stress, and hormonal changes. If you have ongoing concerns, particularly about phimosis or sexual health, seeking advice from a healthcare provider can provide clarity and reassurance. Remember, open communication with a trusted adult or healthcare professional can help address your worries and guide you through this stage of development.
