Is it abnormal to have symptoms after hemorrhoid ligation?
Hello, doctor.
I had a third-degree hemorrhoidectomy on March 12, and it has been extremely painful for many days, but I managed to endure it.
Currently, it is about day 10-11 post-surgery.
Starting from around day 8, I noticed a small lump at the anal opening.
After bathing, I examined it with a mirror and saw a flesh-colored mass protruding that resembles hemorrhoidal tissue, with what looks like a complete surgical wound on the side.
For the past few days, I was unable to push it back in, but today, after applying medication, I can push it back, although it keeps coming out again.
Is this post-operative tissue swelling? Will it gradually reduce and retract back into the anal canal? Previously, I sought medical attention because the hemorrhoids had enlarged and would slip out but could be pushed back in, although they would carry a small amount of stool, raising concerns about hygiene.
However, post-surgery, there has been a spherical mass that remains outside for an extended period.
Although it is no longer the purplish mass it was before, I am still worried that the same issue may persist in the future...

Internal hemorrhoid ligation usually does not cause significant pain.
Based on your description, it is possible that the external hemorrhoid has become swollen after the ligation of the internal hemorrhoid.
You can start by taking warm sitz baths and using anti-inflammatory and swelling-reducing medications.
If the swelling and pain persist, it is important to return for a follow-up examination to assess the wound and determine if hemorrhoidectomy is necessary.

Post-surgery recovery from hemorrhoid surgery can be a challenging experience, and it's understandable to have concerns about the healing process. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing some common post-operative symptoms, but let's break it down further.
Firstly, it's important to acknowledge that pain and discomfort are typical after hemorrhoid surgery, especially in the initial days following the procedure. The fact that you are around 10-11 days post-surgery indicates that you are still within the normal recovery window. The presence of a small flesh-colored lump at the anal area, which you describe as resembling hemorrhoidal tissue, could indeed be related to post-operative swelling or the formation of scar tissue.
In the days following surgery, it is common for the surgical site to swell as part of the healing process. This swelling can sometimes make it appear as though hemorrhoids are still present, even if they have been surgically addressed. The fact that you can push the lump back in suggests that it may not be a new hemorrhoid but rather a result of the surgical site healing.
Regarding your concerns about hygiene, it is crucial to maintain cleanliness in the area to prevent infection. Gentle cleaning with warm water and mild soap, along with the use of prescribed topical medications, can help manage any discomfort and promote healing. If you are experiencing difficulty with bowel movements, consider incorporating a high-fiber diet and staying hydrated to avoid straining, which can exacerbate discomfort and swelling.
As for the lump you are feeling, it is essential to monitor its size and any associated symptoms. If it continues to protrude or if you experience increased pain, bleeding, or any signs of infection (such as fever or pus), it would be advisable to follow up with your surgeon or a gastroenterologist. They may perform a physical examination to assess the situation better and determine if further intervention is necessary.
In most cases, post-operative swelling should gradually decrease, and the tissue should return to a more normal state within a few weeks. However, every individual's healing process is unique, and factors such as overall health, adherence to post-operative care instructions, and the extent of the surgery can influence recovery time.
In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they appear to align with typical post-operative experiences. Continue to monitor your symptoms, maintain good hygiene, and follow up with your healthcare provider if you have any doubts or if your condition does not improve. Your recovery is important, and addressing any concerns promptly can help ensure a smoother healing process.
