Side effects of anti-nausea medication?

Two days ago, I went to the emergency room due to a fever, and the doctor administered an injection for dizziness in my arm.
Over the past two days, the injection site has been experiencing numbness.
When I raise my arm or perform other movements involving the arm, the muscle where I received the injection feels not only numb but also somewhat tight, as if it is being restrained by a rope.
I would like to know if this is a normal phenomenon.
If it is normal, are there any methods to alleviate it? Thank you!

Dr. Chen Bingze reply Surgery

Hello, it should just be some effects from the subcutaneous nerves.
It has been two to three days since your injection, so you can try applying a warm compress.

When you receive an anti-nausea injection, such as those containing medications like promethazine or ondansetron, it is not uncommon to experience some localized side effects at the injection site. The symptoms you describe—numbness and a sensation of tightness or restriction in the muscle—can occur for several reasons.

Firstly, the injection itself can cause localized irritation or inflammation in the muscle tissue. This is a common reaction, especially if the injection was administered intramuscularly. The sensation of numbness may be due to temporary nerve irritation or compression in the area where the injection was given. This can happen if the needle inadvertently touches a nerve or if the medication causes swelling in the surrounding tissues.

Secondly, the medication used for anti-nausea can also contribute to these sensations. Some anti-nausea medications can cause sedation or drowsiness, which might make you more aware of sensations in your body, including any discomfort or unusual feelings in the area of the injection.

While these symptoms can be concerning, they are often temporary and resolve on their own within a few days. However, there are several methods you can use to help alleviate discomfort:
1. Rest the Arm: Avoid strenuous activities that involve the arm where the injection was given. Allowing the muscle to rest can help reduce irritation.

2. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the injection site can help soothe the muscle and improve blood circulation, which may alleviate feelings of tightness or discomfort.

3. Gentle Stretching: If the area feels tight, gentle stretching of the arm and shoulder may help relieve some of the tension. Be cautious not to overdo it, as you don’t want to exacerbate any irritation.

4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If you are experiencing significant discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help. However, consult with a healthcare provider before taking any medication, especially if you have other health conditions or are taking other medications.

5. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your body’s healing processes.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the symptoms. If the numbness persists for more than a few days, worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection (like redness or warmth at the injection site), it is important to seek medical attention.

In summary, while the sensations you are experiencing after receiving an anti-nausea injection can be concerning, they are often normal and temporary. Using the methods mentioned above can help alleviate discomfort. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
