Postoperative issues related to lipoma removal?

Hello Doctor, last November I underwent surgery at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital to remove a lipoma the size of a mung bean from my forehead.
The surgeon mentioned that the swelling would only last for a short period.
I followed the instructions and used silicone tape, and after healing, I switched to using Scar Gel twice daily.
However, it has been over seven months now, and the lump on my forehead is still present and remains red, although it is neither painful nor itchy.
Is this a normal condition?

Hello! It is recommended to return for a follow-up to check if the sutures are absorbable.
Currently, the sutures are all manufactured across the strait, and there are no alternatives available.
Take care! Changhua Hospital is concerned about you!

After undergoing lipoma removal surgery, it is understandable to have concerns about the recovery process, especially when it comes to the appearance and healing of the surgical site. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing some persistent swelling and redness at the site of the lipoma removal, which has lasted for over seven months.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that the healing process can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as the size of the lipoma, the surgical technique used, individual healing responses, and even skin type can all influence recovery outcomes. In general, after a lipoma removal, one can expect some degree of swelling and redness as part of the normal healing process. However, if these symptoms persist for an extended period, it may warrant further investigation.

The fact that the area is not painful or itchy is a positive sign, as it suggests that there may not be an active infection or significant inflammation. However, persistent redness and swelling could indicate a few possibilities:
1. Scar Tissue Formation: After surgery, the body forms scar tissue as part of the healing process. This tissue can sometimes be more prominent and may appear redder than the surrounding skin. Over time, scar tissue can mature and become less noticeable, but this process can take several months to a year.

2. Residual Lipoma Tissue: In some cases, if the lipoma was not completely excised, residual tissue may remain, which could lead to a lump or bump under the skin. This could explain the persistent swelling you are experiencing.

3. Keloid or Hypertrophic Scarring: Some individuals are prone to developing keloids or hypertrophic scars, which can be raised and red in appearance. These types of scars can occur after any type of skin injury, including surgical procedures.

4. Post-Inflammatory Erythema: Sometimes, after an injury or surgery, the skin can remain red for an extended period due to post-inflammatory changes. This is usually benign and may resolve on its own over time.

Given that you have been using silicone gel (倍舒痕凝膠) as directed, which is known to help improve the appearance of scars, it is a good step in managing the healing process. However, if the redness and swelling continue to be a concern, it would be advisable to follow up with your surgeon or a dermatologist. They can assess the area more thoroughly and determine if any additional treatments are necessary, such as corticosteroid injections for keloids or other interventions to improve the appearance of the scar.

In summary, while some degree of swelling and redness can be normal after lipoma removal, prolonged symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. They can provide reassurance, rule out any complications, and suggest appropriate management strategies to help improve the healing process. Remember, patience is key in recovery, and it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your healing progress.

During surgery, the superficial nerves may be affected when the skin is incised, leading to abnormal sensations or numbness around the wound. This is a normal phenomenon and will improve over time.
