Post-sinus surgery
I was diagnosed with sinusitis two years ago and took antibiotics for a year without any improvement.
In October of last year, I underwent sinus surgery.
Currently, I have no discomfort or unusual odors, but every few weeks after the surgery, I notice that a large piece of jelly-like mucus comes out of that side of my nose.
It doesn't require any special effort; it just comes out with normal breathing.
The size varies, ranging from about 3 mm to the size of a thumbnail.
Is this a normal occurrence, or should I schedule a follow-up appointment? Could it be indicative of another issue?

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology
Sinusitis is very prone to recurrence; it is a good sign as long as there is no accumulation of pus (the discharge of pus is a positive sign).
If there is a significant amount of secretion, it is advisable to perform nasal irrigation or take medication to prevent recurrence.
A follow-up appointment can also be scheduled to assess the condition of the sinuses.
Wishing you good health.

Post-sinus surgery, experiencing jelly-like nasal discharge can be a common occurrence, especially in the weeks and months following the procedure. This type of discharge is often a result of the healing process within the nasal passages and sinuses. After surgery, the mucosal lining of the sinuses and nasal cavity can produce mucus in varying consistencies as it heals and adjusts to the changes made during the operation.
The jelly-like consistency you describe may be due to several factors. Firstly, it could be related to the presence of mucus that has thickened due to inflammation or irritation in the nasal passages. This thick mucus can sometimes take on a gel-like appearance, especially if it is mixed with other secretions or debris from the sinuses. Additionally, the body may be producing more mucus as a protective response to the surgical trauma, which can lead to intermittent discharges of this nature.
While the absence of discomfort and foul odors is a positive sign, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the jelly-like discharge continues to occur frequently or if you start experiencing other symptoms such as pain, increased nasal congestion, or changes in smell, it would be prudent to follow up with your ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to ensure that there are no underlying issues, such as residual inflammation or infection.
In some cases, jelly-like nasal discharge can also indicate the presence of a condition known as "post-nasal drip," where mucus accumulates in the back of the throat and can lead to coughing or throat irritation. This can be exacerbated by allergies or environmental factors, so it is worth considering any recent changes in your environment or health status that might contribute to this symptom.
Moreover, if you have a history of chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps, it is essential to keep in mind that these conditions can sometimes recur after surgery, leading to similar symptoms. Regular follow-up appointments with your ENT specialist can help in managing any potential recurrences and ensuring that your nasal passages remain clear and healthy.
In summary, while jelly-like nasal discharge can be a normal part of the healing process after sinus surgery, it is crucial to remain vigilant. If you notice any changes in the consistency, frequency, or associated symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide you with the best course of action to ensure your continued recovery and overall nasal health.
