What symptoms can occur after endoscopic sinus surgery for sinusitis?

Hello, Dr.
Hu.
I had endoscopic surgery for left-sided sinusitis on the 17th.
However, when I woke up today, I started experiencing nasal discharge.
It's not clear nasal mucus, nor is it bright red blood; it resembles a mixture of nasal mucus and blood clots.
Is it common to have nasal discharge after surgery? If so, how long might this symptom last? Is this considered normal? (Currently, I also have discharge from the left side.) I'm worried that I might have a cold, as the doctor advised me to avoid catching one.
Thank you.

Hello: It is normal to have some nasal discharge mixed with blood clots after endoscopic sinus surgery.
If you are concerned, it is advisable to have your attending physician check it again.
Best regards, Huxin.

After undergoing sinus surgery, it is not uncommon to experience various nasal discharge symptoms as part of the healing process. The presence of nasal discharge, especially if it is not clear and appears to be mixed with blood or blood clots, can be concerning for patients. However, it is essential to understand that some degree of nasal discharge is expected following sinus surgery, particularly within the first few weeks post-operation.

The discharge you describe, which resembles a mixture of nasal mucus and blood, is likely a result of the surgical intervention. During the surgery, the delicate tissues within the nasal passages and sinuses are manipulated, which can lead to minor bleeding and the formation of scabs. As these scabs dissolve and the tissues heal, it is common for patients to notice a change in the color and consistency of their nasal discharge. This can include a range of colors, from yellow to reddish-brown, depending on the extent of healing and any residual blood from the surgery.

Typically, this type of discharge should gradually decrease in both volume and intensity over the weeks following surgery. While some patients may experience this discharge for a few days to a week, others might notice it persisting for a longer period, potentially up to two to three weeks. If the discharge becomes increasingly foul-smelling, thick, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, significant facial pain, or swelling, it may indicate an infection or other complications that warrant further evaluation by your healthcare provider.

Regarding your concern about catching a cold, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's advice to avoid respiratory infections during the recovery period. Post-operative care often includes avoiding exposure to irritants, allergens, and crowded places where viruses can spread. If you do develop symptoms of a cold, such as a runny nose, cough, or sore throat, it is advisable to contact your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend specific treatments or precautions to help manage your symptoms and protect your healing sinus cavities.

In summary, while some nasal discharge is normal after sinus surgery, it is essential to monitor the characteristics of the discharge and any accompanying symptoms. If you have concerns about the nature of your discharge or if it persists beyond what is expected, do not hesitate to reach out to your ENT specialist for further guidance. They can provide reassurance, assess your healing progress, and determine if any additional interventions are necessary to ensure a smooth recovery.
