Post-sinus surgery, experiencing foul-smelling nasal discharge?

As mentioned, I have severe allergies that cause significant nasal congestion and yellow discharge.
After examination, it was found that in addition to allergies, I also have sinusitis and a deviated septum.
To address these issues, I underwent minimally invasive surgery.
It has been one month since the surgery, and the nasal congestion has resolved, but I am still experiencing yellow discharge from my nose that has a foul odor.
Is this normal?

Post-sinus surgery, experiencing foul-smelling nasal discharge can be concerning and is not typically considered a normal outcome. After sinus surgery, especially if it was performed to address chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or structural issues like a deviated septum, patients may experience various symptoms as they heal. However, persistent yellow discharge with a foul odor may indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Firstly, it is important to understand that after sinus surgery, the nasal passages and sinuses can be inflamed and may produce mucus as part of the healing process. This mucus can sometimes be discolored (yellow or green) and may have a different consistency than what is normal for you. However, if the discharge is foul-smelling, it could suggest the presence of an infection, such as bacterial sinusitis, or it may indicate that there are still remnants of infected tissue or debris in the sinus cavities.

In your case, since you have a history of severe allergies and sinusitis, it is possible that the surgery may not have fully resolved the underlying issues. Allergies can lead to chronic inflammation and mucus production, which can complicate recovery. Additionally, if the sinus cavities were not completely cleared of infected material during surgery, this could lead to ongoing symptoms.

It is also worth noting that post-operative care is crucial. Following sinus surgery, patients are often advised to use saline nasal sprays or rinses to help keep the nasal passages moist and clear out any crusting or debris. If you have not been following a post-operative care regimen, this could contribute to the symptoms you are experiencing.

Given these considerations, it is essential to follow up with your ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. They may recommend further evaluation, which could include a nasal endoscopy to visualize the sinuses and determine if there are any blockages or areas of infection. They may also consider prescribing antibiotics if an infection is suspected or recommend additional treatments to manage your symptoms.

In summary, while some nasal discharge can be expected after sinus surgery, persistent yellow discharge with a foul odor is not typical and warrants further investigation. It is important to communicate your symptoms to your healthcare provider to ensure appropriate management and to promote healing. Regular follow-up appointments and adherence to post-operative care instructions are key to achieving the best outcomes after sinus surgery.
