Can it affect urine tests?
Hello, Doctor.
I recently had a labor health examination, and the report showed 1+ hematuria in my urine test.
A few days before the examination, I took a multivitamin and fish oil, but I did not take anything the day before or on the day of the test.
Could this affect the urine test? What could be the cause of the hematuria? I usually drink a lot of water.
Should I go to the hospital to see a urologist?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: You should have a urine test again.
Urine occult blood is a simple screening method, but it requires a formal urinalysis.
If some tests show no red blood cells, then there is no need to worry.
Wishing you good health.

Taking vitamins and supplements can indeed have an impact on urine test results, but the extent of this influence varies depending on the specific substances consumed. In your case, you mentioned taking a multivitamin and fish oil a few days before your urine test, and you are concerned about the presence of blood in your urine (hematuria) as indicated by the test results.
Firstly, it's important to understand that certain vitamins, particularly those that are water-soluble like vitamin C (ascorbic acid), can affect urine tests. High doses of vitamin C can lead to false negatives in urine tests for glucose and can sometimes interfere with the detection of blood in the urine. However, the multivitamin you took may not have contained significant amounts of vitamin C or other components that would directly cause hematuria.
Fish oil, on the other hand, is generally not known to affect urine test results. It is primarily composed of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for cardiovascular health and have anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, it is unlikely that fish oil would contribute to the presence of blood in your urine.
The presence of blood in urine can be caused by a variety of factors, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, trauma, or other underlying medical conditions. Given that you are experiencing this finding, it is advisable to follow up with a healthcare provider, particularly a urologist, to investigate the cause of the hematuria. They may recommend further testing, such as a urinalysis, urine culture, imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan), or cystoscopy, to determine the underlying issue.
In terms of hydration, you mentioned that you drink plenty of water, which is beneficial for urinary health. Adequate hydration can help dilute the urine and may reduce the concentration of potentially irritating substances that could contribute to hematuria. However, if there is an underlying condition, hydration alone may not resolve the issue.
In summary, while certain vitamins can affect urine test results, the specific vitamins you mentioned are unlikely to be the cause of the hematuria. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the cause of the blood in your urine and to receive appropriate care. Early evaluation and intervention can help address any potential health concerns and provide peace of mind.
