Urethral discharge
I would like to ask the doctor, is it normal to have a clear, odorless discharge after pulling down the foreskin following a bathroom visit? Or is it actually just urine that I didn't clean up properly?
Mr. Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/07/26
Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: If you have engaged in sexual activity, please get a urine test.
If you have not engaged in sexual activity, you may need to dry yourself after urination.
Wishing you good health.

Clear, odorless urethral discharge can be a common occurrence, particularly in males. When you retract the foreskin and notice a clear, watery discharge, it is often a normal physiological response. This discharge can be attributed to several factors, including natural lubrication from the glands in the penis, particularly the prepuce (foreskin), which secretes a substance called smegma. Smegma is a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture that can accumulate under the foreskin and may appear as a clear or whitish fluid.
In many cases, this clear discharge is not a cause for concern, especially if it is odorless and not accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or pain. It is essential to differentiate between normal discharge and potential signs of infection. If the discharge changes in color, becomes foul-smelling, or is accompanied by discomfort, it may indicate an underlying issue such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or sexually transmitted infection (STI), and you should seek medical attention.
Regarding your concern about whether this discharge could be residual urine, it is possible that some urine may remain in the urethra after urination, especially if the urination process is not completed thoroughly. This can lead to a small amount of clear fluid being expelled when the foreskin is retracted. To minimize this, ensure that you fully empty your bladder during urination and consider gently shaking or tapping the penis after urination to help expel any remaining urine.
If you are experiencing this discharge frequently and are unsure about its nature, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, conduct tests to rule out any infections or other medical conditions.
In summary, clear, odorless discharge from the urethra can be normal, particularly if it is not associated with any discomfort or changes in color or odor. However, maintaining good hygiene and monitoring any changes in your symptoms is crucial. If you have any doubts or if the situation changes, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation and peace of mind.
