Redness and swelling of the urethral opening?

Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing redness and slight swelling at the urethral opening for several months (the swelling resembles lips).
It is not painful and has no odor.
I usually masturbate about 1 to 2 times a day.
However, in the past month, I have only had morning erections about 3 times (but I still experience natural erections during daily activities and can achieve normal engorgement during masturbation).
Recently, I also noticed a small lump (slightly hard and immovable) on the right side of the penile corpus cavernosum, which appears during erection (the exact location is uncertain).
I would like to ask the doctor if this situation could be due to excessive sexual activity? Should I seek medical attention, or should I just observe for now? Thank you, doctor.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding urethral swelling and related symptoms. It’s understandable to feel anxious about changes in your body, especially when they persist over time. Let’s break down your situation and provide some insights.

From your description, it sounds like you are experiencing mild swelling at the urethral opening, which has been ongoing for several months. The fact that it is not painful and does not have an unusual odor is somewhat reassuring, but it’s still important to consider the potential causes and implications of these symptoms.

Possible Causes of Urethral Swelling
1. Irritation or Inflammation: This could be due to various factors, including friction from masturbation, use of certain soaps or hygiene products, or even sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While you mentioned that there is no pain or odor, some infections can present with subtle symptoms.

2. Peyronie's Disease: The small, hard lump you mentioned in the erectile tissue could be indicative of Peyronie's disease, which involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, causing curved, painful erections. However, this typically presents with pain or curvature during erections.

3. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, reactions to lubricants, condoms, or other products can cause localized swelling and irritation.

4. Urethral Stricture: Although less common, a narrowing of the urethra can lead to swelling and changes in urination patterns.

5. Varicocele or Other Vascular Issues: The lump you feel could also be related to vascular changes or conditions affecting blood flow in the penis.

When to Seek Medical Help
Given that your symptoms have persisted for several months, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some signs that warrant immediate medical attention:
- Increased Swelling or Pain: If the swelling becomes more pronounced or painful, this could indicate an infection or other complications.

- Changes in Urination: Difficulty urinating, blood in urine, or changes in the flow of urine should be evaluated promptly.

- Persistent Lumps: Any new lumps that do not resolve or change in character should be assessed by a doctor.

- Sexual Dysfunction: If you experience significant changes in your ability to achieve or maintain an erection, this should also be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Recommendations
1. Avoid Irritants: Until you can see a doctor, try to avoid any potential irritants, such as harsh soaps or excessive friction during masturbation.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the size of the swelling, any new lumps, or changes in sexual function.

3. Consult a Specialist: A urologist would be the most appropriate specialist to evaluate your symptoms. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests such as an ultrasound or urine analysis to rule out infections or other conditions.

4. Discuss Sexual Health: If you are concerned about the frequency of masturbation or its impact on your health, discussing this with a healthcare provider can provide clarity and reassurance.

In conclusion, while some of your symptoms may not seem urgent, the persistence of urethral swelling and the presence of a lump warrant a professional evaluation. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind. Please consider scheduling an appointment with a urologist to discuss your symptoms in detail.

Take care, and I hope you find the answers and relief you seek.
