The child's legs are misaligned?
Hello Dr.
Lee,
The school nurse informed me that my child was unable to stand straight while measuring height, and it seems that one thigh bone is higher than the other.
She suggested that I consult an orthopedic doctor.
Should I look for a general orthopedic specialist or a pediatric orthopedic specialist? It seems that there is no pediatric orthopedic department at Tainan Hospital.
Could you please let me know if this situation could affect my child's growth? If I need to find a doctor, which specialty should I seek? Could you recommend a specialist for children? I live in Tainan, and my child is 8 years old.
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Yu-Ling

Hello: In response to your question, I am also from Tainan.
I recommend taking your child to see Dr.
Yang Jun-Yu, the Chief of Orthopedics at Cheng Kung University Hospital, or Dr.
Qin Ling-Xiao, the Chief of Orthopedics at Chi Mei Medical Center.
Both are pediatric orthopedic specialists and I believe they can help resolve your issue.

Hello, and thank you for your question regarding your child's leg discrepancies and the appropriate steps to take. It’s understandable to be concerned about any potential issues with your child's growth and development, especially when it comes to something as crucial as leg length discrepancies.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that leg length discrepancies can occur for various reasons, including congenital conditions, developmental issues, or even postural habits. In children, these discrepancies can sometimes be a normal part of growth, but they can also indicate underlying issues that may need to be addressed.
When it comes to seeking medical advice, it is generally recommended to consult a pediatric orthopedic specialist, especially since your child is only 8 years old. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons are specifically trained to deal with musculoskeletal issues in children, including growth-related concerns. They have the expertise to assess your child's condition accurately and determine whether any intervention is necessary.
If there is no pediatric orthopedic department available in Tainan, you might consider visiting a general orthopedic surgeon who has experience working with children. They can perform a thorough evaluation and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist who can provide more focused care.
As for the potential impact on your child's growth, leg length discrepancies can affect not only physical development but also overall health and well-being. Significant discrepancies can lead to issues such as gait abnormalities, joint pain, and even psychological effects due to self-image concerns. Early intervention is often key in managing these issues effectively, so it’s wise to seek medical advice sooner rather than later.
In terms of what to expect during the consultation, the orthopedic specialist will likely conduct a physical examination, which may include measuring the lengths of your child's legs and assessing their posture and gait. They may also order imaging studies, such as X-rays, to get a clearer picture of the bones and joints involved. Based on the findings, they will discuss potential treatment options, which could range from observation and physical therapy to surgical interventions if deemed necessary.
In summary, I recommend that you seek a consultation with a pediatric orthopedic specialist or an experienced general orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible. This will ensure that your child's condition is evaluated properly and that any necessary interventions can be implemented in a timely manner. If you need assistance finding a suitable doctor in Tainan, consider reaching out to local hospitals or clinics for recommendations, or check online resources that list pediatric orthopedic specialists in your area.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you and your child the best in addressing this concern. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or need additional information.
