Concerns After Circumcision Surgery

Hello, Dr.
Lin! This is Lin X.
De.
I was one of the four patients who had the circumcision surgery on July 22.
Alright, let's get to the point.
I would like to ask you why the area behind the glans, in front of the gauze, is swollen like a mushroom and it really hurts! Is that normal? Since the outpatient clinic won't be open until next Monday, and you happen to not have clinic hours at the hospital, the staff didn't give me your mobile number, so...
that's the situation! P.S.
If it's convenient for you, could you please give me your mobile number? I feel that email is a bit inefficient, and distant water can't quench a nearby fire.

Dr. Lin Hexing reply Urology

Hello RYO: This is a normal reaction after circumcision surgery.
It is recommended that you take a warm water bath for 10 minutes after showering tonight.
You should soak in warm water once every evening to help reduce swelling more quickly.
If you have any issues, please return for a follow-up appointment, or you can call the hospital at 2231150 and ask the operator to transfer you to the Urology Clinic (evening 1206, daytime 1105).

Hello, Lin X-de,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns following your circumcision surgery. It's understandable to have questions about the healing process, especially when experiencing symptoms like swelling and pain. Let's break down your concerns regarding the swelling and pain you're experiencing.

Firstly, it’s quite common to experience some degree of swelling and discomfort after a circumcision. The surgical procedure involves cutting away the foreskin, which can lead to inflammation as part of the body's natural healing response. Swelling can occur in the area around the glans (the head of the penis) and the surrounding tissues. This is often due to increased blood flow and fluid accumulation as your body works to heal the surgical site.

The swelling you described, particularly if it resembles a "mushroom" shape, could be a normal part of the healing process. However, it’s essential to monitor the severity of the swelling and any accompanying symptoms. If the swelling is significant, persistent, or accompanied by severe pain, redness, or discharge, it may indicate an infection or other complications that would require medical attention.

Pain is also a common symptom post-surgery. The level of pain can vary from person to person, and it is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, unless your doctor has prescribed something stronger. If the pain is severe and not alleviated by medication, or if it worsens over time, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider.

In terms of care, here are a few recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
1. Keep the Area Clean: Follow your doctor's instructions on how to clean the area. Gentle washing with mild soap and water can help prevent infection.

2. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and avoid activities that may irritate the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until your doctor gives you the go-ahead.

3. Ice Application: If swelling is significant, applying a cold pack wrapped in a cloth to the area for short periods can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the swelling and pain. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge, or if the pain becomes unbearable, seek medical attention promptly.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: It’s essential to attend your follow-up appointments as scheduled. Your healthcare provider will assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.

Regarding your request for my contact information, I must advise you to communicate through the appropriate channels for patient inquiries. It’s important to maintain professional boundaries and ensure that all communication is documented properly.

In summary, while some swelling and pain are normal after circumcision, it’s vital to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and comfort are paramount, and they will be able to provide the best guidance tailored to your situation.

Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
Best regards.
