Preauricular sinus surgery
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask why the surgical site is still swollen even though I had my surgery on November 1st and my stitches were removed on November 12th.
Thank you.

Dr. Xu Jiazhen reply Otolaryngology
Hello: In response to your question...
it is normal for the wound to still be swollen.
Generally, it takes about three months for the tissue of the wound to fully mature, and it may take up to six months for the scar tissue to fade.
Please be patient and return to your surgeon's clinic for follow-up.

Post-surgery swelling is a common concern for patients who have undergone ear canal surgery, and it can be attributed to several factors related to the body's healing process. After any surgical procedure, including those involving the ear canal, it is normal for the surgical site to experience some degree of swelling. This is part of the inflammatory response, which is the body's natural way of healing and protecting the affected area.
When you undergo surgery, the body responds by sending blood and immune cells to the area to promote healing. This increased blood flow can lead to swelling, which may persist for days or even weeks after the procedure. In your case, since you had surgery on November 1st and had your stitches removed on November 12th, it is not unusual for some swelling to still be present. The timeline for swelling can vary significantly from person to person, depending on factors such as the extent of the surgery, individual healing rates, and any underlying health conditions.
In addition to the normal inflammatory response, other factors can contribute to prolonged swelling. These may include:
1. Infection: If there is an infection at the surgical site, it can lead to increased swelling, redness, and pain. Signs of infection may include fever, increased warmth around the area, or discharge that is not clear or blood-tinged.
2. Fluid Accumulation: Sometimes, fluid can accumulate in the tissues around the surgical site, leading to a condition known as seroma. This can happen if the lymphatic drainage is temporarily disrupted during surgery.
3. Tissue Trauma: The surgical procedure itself can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues, leading to swelling. The more extensive the surgery, the more likely it is that significant swelling will occur.
4. Allergic Reactions: Occasionally, patients may have allergic reactions to medications or materials used during surgery, which can also cause swelling.
5. Postoperative Care: Following the surgeon's postoperative care instructions is crucial. Activities that put strain on the surgical site or fail to keep the area clean can exacerbate swelling.
If the swelling is accompanied by severe pain, fever, or any signs of infection, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider promptly. They may want to evaluate the surgical site to rule out any complications.
In most cases, the swelling should gradually decrease over time. You can help manage the swelling by following these general recommendations:
- Rest: Ensure you are getting enough rest to allow your body to heal.
- Ice Application: Applying ice packs to the area (if recommended by your surgeon) can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Elevation: Keeping your head elevated, especially while sleeping, can help minimize swelling.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress.
In summary, while it is common to experience swelling after ear canal surgery, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the swelling persists beyond what is expected or if you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track.
