A problem that has been troubling me for a long time!!

Hello, Doctor: I've been struggling with acne for about 2 to 3 years now! I'm a freshman in high school this year, and I tend to break out quite a bit.
I've tried many topical acne treatments and even consulted a dermatologist, but I haven't seen any improvement.
My forehead gets oily easily, and the skin around my nose is red.
I don't know why! I used to not have acne on my cheeks, but now I'm starting to break out there too, especially more on the right side.
It's really hard to get my skin back to how it used to be! I consider myself to be quite diligent about facial cleansing and skincare, but I really don't know what to do.
Besides stress, genetics, and lack of sleep, could my facial cleanser also be a factor? I've tried many different cleansers, and I hope you can recommend some brands or share some tips for washing my face to help improve my situation!

Relying solely on facial cleansers is often insufficient to resolve skin issues; individuals who are prone to acne may still require medication.
You can try Neutrogena's Deep Clean or Kiehl's products.
The medical-grade Niacinamide and Glycolic Acid antibacterial cleanser is also worth considering, although it tends to be on the pricier side.

Dealing with acne can be a frustrating experience, especially during your teenage years when hormonal changes are at their peak. It's great that you're seeking effective skincare solutions, as understanding your skin's needs is crucial for managing acne.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that acne can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormones, genetics, diet, stress, and skincare products. Since you mentioned that you've been struggling with acne for 2-3 years, it might be beneficial to consult with a dermatologist who can provide personalized treatment options based on your specific skin type and condition.

In terms of skincare, the products you use can significantly impact your skin's health. Here are some general recommendations for managing acne-prone skin:
1. Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Look for products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, as these ingredients can help unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Brands like Cetaphil, Neutrogena, and La Roche-Posay offer gentle cleansers that are well-suited for acne-prone skin.

2. Moisturizing: Even if your skin is oily, it's essential to keep it hydrated. Opt for an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Gel-based moisturizers can be a good choice as they provide hydration without adding excess oil.

3. Spot Treatments: For active breakouts, consider using spot treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These can help target individual pimples without affecting the surrounding skin.

4. Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells that clog pores. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as this can irritate your skin and worsen acne. Look for gentle exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).

5. Avoiding Irritants: Be mindful of the products you use on your skin. Avoid heavy makeup, oily sunscreens, and products with harsh ingredients that can irritate your skin. Always check for non-comedogenic labels.

6. Diet and Lifestyle: While the relationship between diet and acne is still being studied, some people find that reducing dairy and sugar intake can help improve their skin. Additionally, ensure you're getting enough sleep and managing stress, as both can exacerbate acne.

7. Consulting a Dermatologist: If over-the-counter products aren't providing relief, a dermatologist can prescribe topical or oral medications, such as retinoids, antibiotics, or hormonal treatments, which can be more effective for persistent acne.

8. Patience and Consistency: Acne treatment takes time. It's essential to be consistent with your skincare routine and give products time to work, typically 4-6 weeks.

As for your concern about the relationship between your cleanser and acne, it's possible that certain ingredients in some cleansers may not be suitable for your skin type. If you notice that a particular product seems to worsen your acne, it may be best to discontinue its use.

In summary, managing acne requires a comprehensive approach that includes gentle cleansing, proper moisturizing, targeted treatments, and lifestyle adjustments. Don't hesitate to reach out to a dermatologist for tailored advice and treatment options. With the right care and patience, you can achieve clearer skin.
