How to Identify Fake Medications

Hello Dr.
Hou: I saw your previous response online regarding the issue of glucosamine.
I would like to ask about the dosage of GLUCOSAMINE 750mg and another bottle of GLUCOSAMINE 750mg, as well as GLUCOSAMINE 1500mg and GLUCOSAMINE 1200mg.
The dosage of these two bottles differs by a factor of two; how should they be taken? Is there a certain age at which one should start taking glucosamine? If someone in their 30s experiences lower back pain due to work-related issues, can they take it? Both of these products were brought back from abroad and do not have any Chinese labeling.
How can I distinguish between genuine and counterfeit products? Thank you for your hard work, Dr.
Hou.
I appreciate your response and wish you good health.

~Ai~, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/01/22

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology

Hello: The usage of glucosamine is based on the National Health Insurance coverage guidelines, which state that it can only be used for individuals aged 65 and older with X-ray evidence of chronic degenerative arthritis.
Treatment indications include joint diseases caused by the decline of bone and joint metabolic function, such as cervical spondylitis, thoracic spondylitis, osteoporosis, sacroiliitis, scapulohumeral arthritis, knee osteoarthritis, periosteal sclerosis, chronic and acute arthritis, low back pain, fractures, and osteoarthropathy.

Dosage and administration: The dosage is 314 mg per capsule.

1.
For mild to moderate joint symptoms: Take 2 capsules twice daily for a continuous treatment of 6 weeks.

2.
For severe joint symptoms:
(1) Initial treatment: At least 8 weeks, take 2 capsules three times daily, 15 minutes before meals.

(2) Continued treatment: For at least 3 to 4 months, maintain a dosage of 2 capsules twice daily, 5 minutes before meals.

You can also check the dosage on your container; according to that, you should only need to take one capsule a day.
At 30 years old, do you really need to start taking it so early? Even if you take it, there should be no side effects.

To distinguish between genuine and counterfeit products, in Taiwan, you can check the Ministry of Health and Welfare's website for the license number, the name of the applicant, the name of the manufacturer, indications, and the manufacturer's address.
If you brought it back from abroad, you can also look for the FDA logo and the manufacturer's name to verify its authenticity.

More Info

When it comes to glucosamine supplements, particularly those like Glucosamine Complex and Chondroitin Sulfate, understanding their authenticity and proper usage is crucial, especially for individuals experiencing joint issues, such as older adults or those with specific conditions like back pain.

Identifying Authenticity of Glucosamine Supplements
1. Check the Label: Authentic glucosamine supplements should have clear labeling that includes the active ingredients, dosage, and any additional components like chondroitin sulfate. Look for the specific amounts of glucosamine (e.g., 750mg, 1500mg) and chondroitin (e.g., 400mg) per serving.

2. Look for Certifications: Reputable brands often have third-party testing certifications. Look for seals from organizations like NSF International or the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), which indicate that the product has been tested for quality and purity.

3. Research the Brand: Investigate the manufacturer. Established brands with a good reputation are less likely to produce counterfeit products. Look for reviews and testimonials from other users.

4. Check for Expiration Dates: Authentic products will always have a clear expiration date. If this is missing or appears tampered with, it could indicate a counterfeit product.

5. Consult Healthcare Professionals: If in doubt, consult a pharmacist or healthcare provider who can recommend reputable brands or products.

Dosage and Usage Recommendations
Regarding the dosage of glucosamine supplements, the general recommendation for adults is typically between 1500mg to 2000mg per day, divided into multiple doses. For example, if you have a product that contains 750mg of glucosamine, you might take two to three capsules daily, depending on the specific formulation and your healthcare provider's advice.

For someone in their 30s experiencing back pain due to work-related stress, it is generally safe to start taking glucosamine supplements. While these supplements are often marketed towards older adults, younger individuals can also benefit, especially if they have joint discomfort or are at risk for joint issues due to their lifestyle.

Potential Benefits and Considerations
Glucosamine and chondroitin are known for their potential benefits in supporting joint health. They may help in reducing pain and improving function in individuals with osteoarthritis and other joint-related conditions. However, it’s essential to note that results can vary from person to person.

Side Effects and Precautions
While glucosamine is generally considered safe, some individuals may experience mild side effects, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, or diarrhea. It’s also important to be cautious if you have shellfish allergies, as some glucosamine supplements are derived from shellfish.

Monitoring and Consultation
If you decide to start taking glucosamine supplements, it’s advisable to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking other medications. Regular follow-ups can help assess the effectiveness of the supplement and make any necessary adjustments.

Conclusion
In summary, when considering glucosamine supplements, ensure you verify their authenticity through proper labeling, certifications, and brand reputation. Dosage typically ranges from 1500mg to 2000mg per day, and younger individuals can benefit from these supplements if they experience joint discomfort. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen to ensure it aligns with your health needs and conditions.
