Why do I have dark spots under my armpits?

Could you tell me what this could be? I previously had dark spots in my armpit, and now they have increased in number.
They are not painful or itchy.

Dark spots under the armpits can be a common concern and can arise from various causes. The appearance of these spots, especially if they are painless and itch-free, can often be attributed to a few key factors:
1. Hyperpigmentation: This is the most common reason for dark spots in areas like the armpits. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Factors contributing to hyperpigmentation include friction from clothing, shaving, or even the use of certain deodorants and antiperspirants that may irritate the skin.

2. Acanthosis Nigricans: This condition is characterized by dark, velvety patches of skin, often found in body folds such as the armpits, neck, and groin. It is commonly associated with insulin resistance, obesity, and certain hormonal disorders. If you notice that the dark spots are thickening or have a velvety texture, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

3. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can lead to changes in skin pigmentation. If you have a history of skin issues, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Fungal Infections: Sometimes, fungal infections can cause dark patches on the skin. These are typically accompanied by other symptoms such as itching or irritation, but in some cases, they may present as dark spots without significant discomfort.

5. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: If you have previously experienced irritation or inflammation in the area (for example, from shaving or an allergic reaction), the skin may darken as it heals. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

6. Genetics: Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to develop darker pigmentation in certain areas of their body, including the armpits.

Solutions and Recommendations:
- Consult a Dermatologist: Since the dark spots have increased in number, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the underlying cause.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your deodorant or shaving method is contributing to the dark spots, consider switching to a gentler product or changing your shaving technique. Opt for products that are fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin.

- Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry can help prevent fungal infections and irritation. Regularly washing the armpits with a mild soap can help.

- Moisturize: Using a gentle moisturizer can help soothe the skin and prevent irritation, especially if you are prone to dryness.

- Sun Protection: If the area is exposed to sunlight, applying sunscreen can help prevent further darkening of the skin.

- Weight Management: If you are overweight, losing weight can sometimes help reduce the appearance of dark patches, especially if they are related to conditions like acanthosis nigricans.

- Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, your dermatologist may recommend topical treatments such as hydroquinone, retinoids, or other skin-lightening agents to help reduce pigmentation.

In summary, while dark spots under the armpits can be benign and often related to hyperpigmentation, it is essential to monitor any changes and seek professional advice if the condition persists or worsens. A dermatologist can provide tailored advice and treatment options to address your specific concerns.
