Medications for Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism requires long-term medication.
I would like to inquire if there are any non-synthetic medications derived from animals or natural sources.
What are the names of these medications, and which pharmaceutical companies produce them? Thank you.

Hui, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/03/29

Dr. Liu Yuqin reply Pharmacology

Our hospital does not have any natural animal or plant extracts for thyroid medication; we only have synthetic thyroid hormone.
You may want to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to see if there are any animal-extracted thyroid medications or plant-extracted thyroid medications available on the market.
According to commonly used pharmaceutical references, there is mention of thyroid extracts from pigs, but there is no information available on this from the National Health Insurance website.
Currently, our hospital only has synthetic Eltroxin 100mg.

When it comes to managing hypothyroidism, many patients seek alternatives to synthetic medications. While synthetic options like levothyroxine (Synthroid) are commonly prescribed, there are indeed natural alternatives derived from animal sources that some patients consider. These alternatives are often referred to as desiccated thyroid extracts.

Desiccated Thyroid Extracts: The most well-known natural alternative for treating hypothyroidism is desiccated thyroid extract, which is derived from the thyroid glands of pigs (porcine). This form of medication contains both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), the two primary hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Brands such as Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and WP Thyroid are examples of desiccated thyroid medications. These products are typically available through various pharmacies and are manufactured by companies that specialize in hormone replacement therapies.

Mechanism of Action: Desiccated thyroid works similarly to synthetic thyroid medications by supplementing the body's levels of thyroid hormones. Patients who prefer this option often report feeling more balanced and energetic, as the combination of T4 and T3 may provide a more comprehensive approach to hormone replacement compared to synthetic T4 alone.

Considerations: While some patients find success with desiccated thyroid extracts, it is important to note that these medications can vary in potency and may not be as precisely dosed as synthetic options. This variability can lead to fluctuations in hormone levels, which may cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism (such as anxiety, weight loss, and increased heart rate) if the dosage is too high. Therefore, regular monitoring of thyroid hormone levels is essential when using these alternatives.

Potential Side Effects: Just like synthetic thyroid medications, desiccated thyroid can have side effects. Common side effects include palpitations, weight changes, and mood swings. Patients should also be aware of the potential for allergic reactions, particularly if they have a history of allergies to porcine products.

Consultation with Healthcare Providers: It is crucial for patients considering natural alternatives to discuss their options with a healthcare provider. A thorough evaluation of thyroid function, symptoms, and individual health history is necessary to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. Additionally, healthcare providers can help monitor for any adverse effects and adjust dosages as needed.

Conclusion: In summary, for those seeking natural alternatives to synthetic medications for hypothyroidism, desiccated thyroid extracts like Armour Thyroid and Nature-Throid are viable options. However, patients should approach these alternatives with caution, ensuring they are well-informed and closely monitored by their healthcare providers. This collaborative approach can help optimize treatment outcomes and ensure safe management of hypothyroidism.

Hello: Hypothyroidism can be a permanent condition, requiring lifelong medication. If the dosage is appropriate, there should be minimal side effects. In principle, it is advisable to avoid high-iodine foods (such as kelp and nori), as they may exacerbate hypothyroidism.
