Is it suitable for individuals with hypothyroidism to consume dietary supplements containing green algae?
Twenty-three years ago, I underwent surgery for thyroid enlargement.
In December 2016, during a health check-up, my doctor recommended that I get a thyroid ultrasound at a nearby hospital.
In early May of this year, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules through blood tests, ultrasound, and a biopsy.
I started taking Eltroxin (Thyroid-S) 100 mcg/tablet to treat my hypothyroidism.
I would like to inquire about a green smoothie enzyme powder called Very Green Smoothie, which contains three types of seaweed enzymes (kombu, wakame, and nori).
Is it safe for me to consume this nutritional supplement? Additionally, I am concerned about losing breast fat while trying to lose weight.
Can I take breast enhancement supplements (such as white cohosh and yam) together with this product? Please help me with these questions.
Thank you!

Dr. Cai Xiuwen reply Nutrition
Hello! Hypothyroidism resulting from thyroidectomy requires regular follow-up examinations and medication management with a physician.
Weight gain is also a common side effect of hypothyroidism, which necessitates medication, dietary control, and exercise for adjustment.
Relying solely on enzymes may not effectively control weight and could potentially lead to other side effects.
It is recommended that you consult a professional nutritionist for dietary counseling, review your dietary intake, and establish a meal plan in conjunction with exercise to achieve comprehensive management.
As for enzymes, their impact on weight is expected to be minimal, and for breast enhancement supplements, it is also advisable to discuss them with your nutritionist.
Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to consuming green algae supplements, particularly for individuals with hypothyroidism, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. Hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, can lead to various symptoms including weight gain, fatigue, and sensitivity to cold. The treatment typically involves hormone replacement therapy, such as Eltroxin (levothyroxine), which helps to normalize thyroid hormone levels.
Green algae, including varieties like spirulina and chlorella, are often marketed as superfoods due to their high nutrient content, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, they also contain iodine, which is a crucial element for thyroid hormone production. For individuals with hypothyroidism, particularly those who have had thyroid surgery or have thyroid nodules, the intake of iodine should be monitored carefully. While iodine is essential for thyroid function, excessive intake can lead to complications, including the exacerbation of thyroid disorders.
In your case, since you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and are currently on medication, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your diet, including the Very Green Smoothie that contains various seaweed enzymes. Your doctor can assess your current thyroid function and determine whether the iodine content in the supplement could pose any risks.
Moreover, regarding weight management, it is common for individuals with hypothyroidism to experience weight gain, and achieving a healthy weight can be more challenging. While green algae supplements may provide some nutritional benefits, they are not a magic solution for weight loss. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and adherence to your prescribed medication are crucial components of effective weight management.
As for the concern about breast fat loss and the use of breast enhancement supplements, it's important to approach this with caution. Many supplements marketed for breast enhancement, such as those containing wild yam or fenugreek, lack robust scientific evidence supporting their efficacy. Additionally, combining multiple supplements can lead to unintended interactions or side effects. Therefore, it is best to discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider, who can offer personalized advice based on your health status and goals.
In summary, while green algae supplements can be beneficial for many, individuals with hypothyroidism should exercise caution and consult their healthcare provider before incorporating them into their regimen. Weight management and breast enhancement should also be approached with a focus on overall health and well-being, rather than solely on the use of supplements. Your healthcare provider can help guide you in making safe and effective choices for your health.
