My acne scars!
I have many acne scars on my skin, mostly around the cheeks.
They are the type that are indented, with mostly small pits and some larger ones.
I previously visited a dermatology clinic where they prescribed topical medications, which seemed to reduce the acne and blackheads, but the indentations on my face have not improved at all.
Recently, I saw online that my condition might require dermabrasion to be effective.
Is this true? If so, how much does one session cost, and how many sessions would I need in total? Thank you.

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology
Yes.
The charges vary slightly from hospital to hospital.
In our hospital, the price for erbium YAG laser treatment is 4,000 for one cheek, 8,000 for both cheeks, and 12,000 for the entire face.
However, the machine is currently out of order, so this is for reference only.
The number of sessions required is not fixed and depends on the depth of the abrasion, but in any case, it is not possible to achieve complete scar disappearance.

Acne scars can be a significant concern for many individuals, particularly when they manifest as pitted or depressed areas on the skin. These scars often result from inflammatory acne lesions, such as cysts or nodules, which can damage the skin's structure during the healing process. When considering treatment options, it's essential to understand the nature of your scars and the available methods for improvement.
Dermabrasion is one of the treatments that can be effective for certain types of acne scars, particularly those that are deeper and more pronounced. This procedure involves the mechanical exfoliation of the skin's surface using a rotating instrument, which removes the outer layers of skin and promotes the growth of new, smoother skin. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with ice pick scars, boxcar scars, or rolling scars. However, it's important to note that dermabrasion is not suitable for everyone, and the effectiveness can vary based on skin type, scar depth, and individual healing responses.
In terms of cost, the price of dermabrasion can vary widely depending on several factors, including the geographic location of the clinic, the experience of the practitioner, and the extent of the treatment required. On average, a single session of dermabrasion can range from $100 to $2,500. It's also important to consider that multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results, especially for more severe scarring. Your dermatologist can provide a more accurate estimate based on your specific condition and treatment plan.
In addition to dermabrasion, there are other treatment options available for acne scars that you might consider. These include:
1. Chemical Peels: These involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the outer layer to peel off and reveal smoother skin underneath. Chemical peels can be effective for superficial scars and may require multiple sessions.
2. Laser Therapy: Laser treatments, such as fractional laser resurfacing, can target deeper layers of skin and stimulate collagen production, leading to improved texture and reduced appearance of scars. This method can be effective for various types of acne scars and typically requires several sessions.
3. Microneedling: This procedure involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates the body's natural healing processes and collagen production. Microneedling can improve the appearance of scars over time and may be combined with topical treatments for enhanced results.
4. Fillers: For certain types of scars, dermal fillers can be injected to raise the depressed areas of the skin, providing immediate improvement. However, this is a temporary solution, and repeat treatments will be necessary.
5. Subcision: This is a minor surgical procedure where a needle is inserted under the skin to break up the fibrous bands that tether the scar to the underlying tissue, allowing the skin to lift and smooth out.
Before deciding on a treatment, it's crucial to consult with a qualified dermatologist who can assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate options based on your specific needs. They can also discuss the potential risks and benefits of each treatment, as well as what to expect in terms of recovery and results.
In conclusion, while dermabrasion can be an effective treatment for acne scars, it is not the only option available. A comprehensive approach that may include a combination of treatments tailored to your skin type and scar characteristics can often yield the best results. Always prioritize a consultation with a skincare professional to ensure you choose the right path for your skin health.
