Irregular menstrual cycle?
Hello, Doctor: I am 17 years old, with a height of 150 cm and a weight of 40 kg.
I started my menstruation during the summer between third and fourth grade (around the end of August), and now as I am about to enter the second year of high school, my menstrual cycle is still irregular.
I often cannot predict when it will come.
Typically, my cycle lasts between 7 to 15 days.
Sometimes, it doesn't come for a month to a month and a half, and other times it lasts for over ten to twenty days, with the longest record being 31 days of bleeding.
Additionally, I experience pain before and during my period.
During menstruation, I feel dizzy, unsteady, and easily fatigued.
Should I see a gynecologist for an examination? Thank you for your response.

More Info
Irregular menstrual cycles can be a common concern for many young women, especially during the first few years after menstruation begins. Given your age and the symptoms you've described, it is important to understand what might be causing these irregularities and when it is appropriate to seek medical help.
Firstly, it is not uncommon for adolescents to experience irregular menstrual cycles. The body is still adjusting to hormonal changes, and it can take several years for cycles to become regular. However, the patterns you've described—such as having periods that last anywhere from 7 to 31 days, along with significant pain and symptoms like dizziness and fatigue—are worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
When to Seek Help
You should consider seeking help from a gynecologist if you experience any of the following:
1. Severe Pain: If your menstrual cramps are debilitating and interfere with your daily activities, this could indicate a condition such as endometriosis or fibroids, which may require treatment.
2. Heavy Bleeding: If you are soaking through one or more pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours, this is considered heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and should be evaluated.
3. Irregular Cycles: While irregular cycles can be normal, if you notice that your periods are consistently more than 35 days apart or if you have missed three or more periods in a row, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
4. Associated Symptoms: Symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, or feeling faint during your period can indicate anemia or other underlying health issues that may need to be addressed.
5. Changes in Cycle Patterns: If you notice a sudden change in your menstrual cycle patterns, such as a significant increase in cycle length or changes in flow, it is important to seek medical advice.
Possible Causes of Irregular Cycles
Several factors can contribute to irregular menstrual cycles, including:
- Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to irregular periods and other symptoms like weight gain and acne.
- Stress and Lifestyle Factors: High levels of stress, significant weight loss or gain, and changes in exercise habits can all affect your menstrual cycle.
- Medical Conditions: Thyroid disorders, diabetes, and other health issues can also lead to irregularities in your cycle.
What to Expect During a Gynecological Visit
When you visit a gynecologist, they will likely ask about your menstrual history, any associated symptoms, and your overall health. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend blood tests to check hormone levels or other underlying conditions. Depending on the findings, they may suggest lifestyle changes, medication, or further testing.
Conclusion
Given your symptoms and the irregular nature of your menstrual cycles, it would be wise to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist. They can provide a thorough evaluation and help you understand what might be causing your irregularities. Early intervention can often lead to better management of symptoms and overall reproductive health. Remember, it’s important to advocate for your health and seek help when something doesn’t feel right.
