Shoulder joint pain and numbness in the right fingers?
Doctor: Hello! Two years ago, I started learning to play golf with a driver and experienced pain in my left shoulder.
I thought a little rest would help it heal, but as time went on, the pain became bearable at times, and I occasionally continued to play.
However, my left shoulder never fully recovered, and eventually, my right shoulder started to hurt as well.
Due to my job, I often use a computer, and recently I've been experiencing significant pain in both shoulders, especially at night, which often wakes me up.
I frequently have severe pain when bending my arms backward, and while I can lift them, there is still some discomfort.
Currently, I still feel soreness even when I'm not moving.
Could you please advise me on what symptoms I might have and how I should seek medical attention? I have seen a doctor before, who only suggested that I avoid lifting heavy objects and prescribed muscle relaxants and painkillers, but there has been no improvement.
I would appreciate your guidance on these symptoms.

Hello: Based on your description, it is not possible to fully determine the type of injury to your shoulder joint.
It could potentially be a tendon strain or overuse injury.
I recommend that you visit our orthopedic outpatient clinic for further examination and treatment.
Thank you!

Shoulder pain and numbness in the fingers can be quite distressing, especially when they persist over time and interfere with daily activities. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing shoulder pain for an extended period, which has now progressed to both shoulders, along with associated symptoms in your arms and fingers. This situation warrants a closer examination of potential causes and appropriate treatment options.
Potential Causes
1. Rotator Cuff Injury: Given your history of playing golf, it's possible that you may have sustained a rotator cuff injury. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Overuse or acute injuries can lead to inflammation, tears, or tendinitis, resulting in pain and limited range of motion.
2. Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: This occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become irritated and inflamed as they pass through the shoulder joint. This can cause pain, especially when lifting the arm or during certain movements.
3. Cervical Radiculopathy: Since you also mention numbness in your fingers, it’s important to consider that the pain may be originating from the cervical spine (neck). A herniated disc or degenerative changes in the cervical spine can compress the nerves that travel down the arm, leading to pain, numbness, and weakness in the shoulder and fingers.
4. Repetitive Strain Injury: Your work involving prolonged computer use can contribute to muscle imbalances and strain in the shoulder and neck region. Poor posture while sitting at a desk can exacerbate these issues.
5. Tendonitis or Bursitis: Inflammation of the tendons or bursae in the shoulder can also lead to pain and discomfort, particularly during movement or at night.
Recommended Solutions
1. Medical Evaluation: It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist, who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include physical examinations, imaging studies (like X-rays or MRIs), and nerve conduction studies to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in a structured physical therapy program can be highly beneficial. A physical therapist can design a rehabilitation program tailored to your specific needs, focusing on strengthening the shoulder muscles, improving flexibility, and correcting posture.
3. Pain Management: While muscle relaxants and pain medications can provide temporary relief, they should not be the sole treatment. Consider integrating non-pharmacological approaches such as heat therapy, ice packs, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to manage pain.
4. Activity Modification: It may be necessary to modify your activities, especially those that exacerbate your symptoms. This includes reducing the frequency of heavy lifting and taking regular breaks during computer work to stretch and change positions.
5. Ergonomic Adjustments: Ensure that your workspace is ergonomically designed to minimize strain on your shoulders and neck. This may involve adjusting your chair, desk height, and monitor position.
6. Gradual Return to Activity: If you are keen on returning to golf or other activities, ensure that you do so gradually. Engage in proper warm-up exercises and consider working with a coach to refine your technique, which can help prevent further injury.
7. Consider Alternative Therapies: Some individuals find relief through acupuncture, chiropractic care, or massage therapy, which can help alleviate muscle tension and improve circulation.
In conclusion, shoulder pain and associated symptoms can stem from various causes, and a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment is essential. By seeking professional help and adhering to a structured rehabilitation plan, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your overall shoulder function. Remember to listen to your body and avoid pushing through pain, as this can lead to further complications.
