For the past four years, sexual intercourse has not been successful?
Hello doctor, I am a 26-year-old woman.
For the past four years, I have been unable to successfully engage in sexual intercourse.
Every time I get intimate with my boyfriend, we end up unable to penetrate.
I have tried using fingers, but while it wasn't excruciatingly painful, it still felt uncomfortable, and it wasn't the pleasurable experience that is often described.
My boyfriend's penis just cannot penetrate, and despite trying hundreds of times, we have not succeeded.
We attempt at least three times a week, but it still doesn't work.
My boyfriend has broken up with me multiple times because of this issue.
Although we cannot engage in sexual activity before marriage, I have been suffering greatly over these four years, and the psychological pressure is immense.
Is there something wrong with me? I am still planning to get married, but I am unsure if I should see a doctor for this reason.
Please help me with this.

It sounds like you are experiencing a very challenging and distressing situation regarding intimacy and painful intercourse. This is a common issue that many women face, and it can stem from a variety of physical, psychological, and emotional factors.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that painful intercourse, also known as dyspareunia, can be caused by several medical conditions. These may include vaginismus, which is an involuntary contraction of the vaginal muscles that can make penetration painful or impossible. Other potential causes could be infections, hormonal changes, or anatomical issues. It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider, such as a gynecologist, who can perform a thorough examination and help identify any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to your discomfort.
In addition to physical causes, psychological factors can also play a significant role in sexual function. Anxiety, fear of pain, and past traumatic experiences can create a cycle of tension and discomfort that makes intimacy difficult. If you have experienced any form of trauma or have anxiety related to sexual activity, it may be beneficial to speak with a mental health professional who specializes in sexual health. Therapy can provide a safe space to explore these feelings and develop coping strategies.
Communication with your partner is also vital. It’s important to have open and honest discussions about your feelings, fears, and experiences. This can help both of you understand each other better and work together to find solutions. Sometimes, taking the pressure off the act of intercourse itself and focusing on other forms of intimacy can help alleviate anxiety and build comfort.
Additionally, consider incorporating relaxation techniques into your routine. Practices such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or yoga can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, which may improve your experience during intimate moments.
If you haven’t already, I strongly encourage you to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation, and they may recommend treatments such as pelvic floor physical therapy, counseling, or other interventions that can help you overcome these challenges.
Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and there are resources and professionals available to support you. It’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being, both physically and emotionally. Taking the first step to seek help can lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable intimate life.
