Urinary bladder infection during pregnancy?

Hello, Doctor! I have been experiencing recurrent vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections on May 8, June 21, and July 20, almost once a month.
Despite following the prescribed medication from various doctors, the infections keep coming back.
I just found out last week that I am pregnant.
I asked my doctor if the medication I took on July 20 would affect the fetus, and they said it would not.
However, just yesterday, I started feeling pain in my urethra again.
The obstetrician prescribed the following medications: 1.
BAKTAR (DUBLECON), 2.
UROPRIN COATED TAB, 3.
MYWELL, 4.
PANADOL.
I would like to ask if these medications are really safe.
I am very worried about having a recurrence during pregnancy.
Does this mean I am not suitable for pregnancy?

Hello: After learning about your pregnancy, it is important to be cautious with medication.
You should know the generic names of any medications previously taken, the gestational week during which they were used, and the dosages.
Then, check the literature for any reports of adverse effects.
I couldn't find information on Uroprin and Mywell in the pharmacopoeia, but Panadol is considered safe.
Baktar is not recommended during pregnancy.
You can compile this information and discuss it with your obstetrician.

Managing urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy is a critical concern for expectant mothers, especially given the physiological changes that occur during this period. Pregnant women are more susceptible to UTIs due to hormonal changes and the growing uterus, which can compress the bladder and urinary tract, leading to incomplete emptying and increased risk of infection.
In your case, it appears that you have been experiencing recurrent UTIs and vaginal yeast infections, which can be frustrating and concerning, particularly now that you are pregnant. The medications prescribed by your obstetrician, including BAKTAR (which contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), UROPRIN, MYWELL, and PANADOL, raise important questions about safety during pregnancy.

1. Safety of Medications:
- BAKTAR: This medication is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, due to potential risks to the fetus, including the possibility of causing congenital malformations. It is classified as a Category D drug by the FDA, meaning there is evidence of risk to the fetus, but it may be prescribed in certain situations where the benefits outweigh the risks.

- UROPRIN: The safety of this medication during pregnancy is less well-documented, and it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider about its use.

- MYWELL: This medication's safety profile during pregnancy is also not well established, so it is crucial to discuss this with your doctor.

- PANADOL (Acetaminophen): This is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy for pain relief and fever reduction.

2. Concerns About Recurrent Infections:
- Recurrent UTIs can be a sign of underlying issues, such as anatomical abnormalities or other health conditions. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to investigate the cause of these recurrent infections and to develop a comprehensive management plan.

- The presence of a UTI during pregnancy can lead to complications, including the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight. Therefore, prompt and effective treatment is crucial.

3. Alternative Treatments and Prevention:
- If you are concerned about the safety of the prescribed medications, discuss alternative treatments with your healthcare provider. Options may include other antibiotics that are safer during pregnancy, such as penicillins or cephalosporins.

- Prevention strategies for UTIs during pregnancy include:
- Staying well-hydrated to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract.

- Urinating frequently and not holding it in.

- Wiping from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from the rectum from entering the urethra.

- Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing.

- Taking probiotics or consuming yogurt may help maintain healthy vaginal flora and reduce the risk of yeast infections.

4. Monitoring and Follow-Up:
- Regular follow-up appointments with your obstetrician are essential to monitor your health and the health of your baby. If you experience any new or worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, or changes in urination, seek medical attention promptly.

In conclusion, while managing UTIs during pregnancy can be challenging, it is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure both your health and the health of your baby. Open communication about your concerns regarding medication safety and the frequency of infections will help you make informed decisions about your treatment options. Remember, your healthcare team is there to support you through this process, so do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.
