What should I do if I have acne?
Doctor, I’m only 13 years old, and my forehead and the area above my nose are covered with acne.
They are red and swollen, and there are so many of them.
My parents tell me this is a phase and that it will eventually stop, but there are really so many, and it’s quite scary.
Is there any effective way to treat this? Or is there a specific type of cleanser that can help clear the acne? Does it have anything to do with my diet? I really hope the acne can clear up quickly.

More Info
Acne is a common skin condition that affects many teenagers, and it can be particularly distressing when it appears in clusters on the forehead and nose, as you've described. At 13 years old, your skin is undergoing significant hormonal changes, which can lead to increased oil production and, consequently, acne. Here are some effective strategies and tips for managing acne and achieving clearer skin.
1. Cleansing Routine
A proper cleansing routine is crucial for managing acne. Look for a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients help to unclog pores and reduce inflammation. It's important to wash your face twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed—to remove excess oil, dirt, and bacteria. Avoid harsh scrubs or cleansers that can irritate your skin and worsen acne.
2. Moisturizing
Even if your skin is oily, it's essential to use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. This helps maintain your skin's hydration without clogging pores. Look for products labeled "non-comedogenic," which means they won't contribute to acne.
3. Topical Treatments
Over-the-counter topical treatments can be effective for mild to moderate acne. Products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids can help reduce acne. If your acne is more severe or persistent, consider consulting a dermatologist who may prescribe topical retinoids or other medications.
4. Diet and Lifestyle
While the relationship between diet and acne is still being studied, some evidence suggests that certain foods may exacerbate acne. Try to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugary snacks, dairy products, and high-glycemic foods, as they may contribute to acne flare-ups. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also beneficial for your skin.
5. Avoid Picking or Squeezing
It can be tempting to pick at or squeeze pimples, but this can lead to scarring and further inflammation. Instead, focus on gentle cleansing and treatment.
6. Sun Protection
If you're using topical treatments, especially those containing retinoids or acids, your skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before going outside, even on cloudy days.
7. Consult a Dermatologist
If your acne is severe, persistent, or causing you distress, it's important to see a dermatologist. They can provide personalized treatment options, which may include prescription medications, topical treatments, or even procedures like chemical peels or laser therapy.
8. Patience and Consistency
Acne treatment takes time, and results may not be immediate. It's important to be patient and consistent with your skincare routine. It can take several weeks to see significant improvement, so stick with your regimen and give it time to work.
Conclusion
While your parents are correct that many teenagers experience acne as a part of growing up, there are effective treatments available to help manage it. By establishing a proper skincare routine, considering dietary choices, and consulting with a dermatologist if necessary, you can take proactive steps toward clearer skin. Remember, you're not alone in this, and many teens face similar challenges. With the right approach, you can achieve healthier skin and boost your confidence.
