I'm very anxious?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a question.
My girlfriend is 17 years old, and we had intercourse for the first time in July this year.
However, I did not ejaculate inside her.
Initially, I thrust a couple of times before pulling out and putting on a condom.
Later, when I was about to ejaculate, I did so outside.
That same night, her period arrived several days early.
Since then, her periods have been regular for two months, but this month it is five days late.
I would like to know if there is a possibility that she could be pregnant after all this time.
Please help me with an answer.
Thank you.

Dan Dan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/10/08

Sometimes, high stress levels or ovarian cysts can cause irregular menstrual cycles.
You can check for pregnancy by purchasing a home pregnancy test or visiting a gynecologist.
Additionally, if a condom is damaged or not used correctly, it can also lead to pregnancy.

When assessing the risk of pregnancy after engaging in sexual intercourse, especially for young couples, it's essential to understand the mechanics of conception and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods used. In your case, you mentioned that you engaged in sexual activity with your girlfriend, but you did not ejaculate inside her, and you used a condom during the latter part of the intercourse. Additionally, you noted that her menstrual cycle was regular for the past two months but is now delayed by five days.

Firstly, it's important to clarify that the risk of pregnancy is significantly reduced when proper contraceptive methods are used, such as condoms. Condoms, when used correctly, have a high effectiveness rate in preventing pregnancy—approximately 98% with perfect use. However, they are not infallible, and factors such as improper usage or breakage can lead to unintended pregnancies.

In your situation, since you did not ejaculate inside her and used a condom during the latter part of the intercourse, the likelihood of pregnancy is low. The fact that her menstrual cycle was regular for the past two months also suggests that her body was functioning normally. However, a delay in menstruation can occur for various reasons, including stress, hormonal changes, or other health-related issues, not just pregnancy.

Given that her period is now five days late, it would be prudent for her to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If the test is positive, it would be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.

Additionally, if she is feeling anxious about the possibility of pregnancy, it might be beneficial for both of you to discuss contraceptive options more thoroughly. There are various methods available, including hormonal birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and emergency contraception, which can provide additional protection against unintended pregnancies.
It's also important to address the emotional aspect of this situation. Many young individuals experience anxiety regarding sexual health and the potential for pregnancy. Open communication between partners about fears and concerns can help alleviate some of this anxiety. Encouraging her to speak with a healthcare professional can also provide reassurance and education about sexual health and contraception.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy in your case appears low due to the precautions taken, the delay in her menstrual cycle warrants a pregnancy test for peace of mind. Regardless of the outcome, this situation can serve as an opportunity for both of you to learn more about sexual health and the importance of effective contraception in your relationship.
