Itching and peeling of the glans penis?

Hello doctor, I have a question.
A few days ago, after having intercourse with my wife, I started experiencing itching on the glans the next day, followed by peeling of the glans.
I took a few days off from sexual activity, but after three days, I couldn't resist and had intercourse with my wife again.
The next day, I noticed a small tear-like wound on the glans, which is very painful.
Currently, I still have peeling and itching of the glans.
What could be the reason for this? (Also, I asked my wife, and she mentioned that she has been experiencing increased vaginal discharge lately.)

A Long, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/10/15

Itchy and painful! It could be a fungal infection.
Please visit a hospital and consult a urologist.

More Info

Itchy and peeling glans can be a concerning issue, especially following sexual activity. The symptoms you describe—itching, peeling, and the appearance of a small tear—could be indicative of several underlying conditions. Here, I will outline potential causes, their implications, and suggested solutions.

Possible Causes
1. Fungal Infections: One of the most common causes of itching and peeling in the genital area is a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (thrush). This can occur in both men and women, and if your partner has increased vaginal discharge, it may suggest a yeast infection, which can be transmitted during sexual activity.

2. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections, including bacterial vaginosis (BV) in your partner, can also lead to symptoms like increased discharge and irritation. While BV is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it can be exacerbated by sexual activity.

3. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, irritation can arise from soaps, lotions, or condoms used during intercourse. If you have recently changed any products, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as herpes or chlamydia, can cause symptoms like itching, irritation, and lesions. The small tear you mentioned could also be a sign of an STI, especially if it is painful.

5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and peeling skin.

Recommended Solutions
1. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until you have a clear diagnosis, it is advisable to refrain from sexual activity. This will help prevent further irritation and allow any potential infections to heal.

2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to see a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly take swabs to identify any infections.

3. Topical Treatments: If a fungal infection is diagnosed, antifungal creams or ointments may be prescribed. For bacterial infections, antibiotics may be necessary. Over-the-counter antifungal creams can also be tried if a yeast infection is suspected.

4. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid using scented soaps or lotions that could irritate the skin further. Wearing loose-fitting, breathable underwear can also help reduce irritation.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge. If symptoms worsen or do not improve with initial treatment, follow up with your healthcare provider.

6. Partner Treatment: If an infection is diagnosed, it is crucial for both partners to be treated to prevent reinfection.

Conclusion
The symptoms you are experiencing could stem from a variety of causes, ranging from infections to irritations. It is vital to seek medical advice to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment. In the meantime, practicing good hygiene and avoiding sexual activity will help manage your symptoms and prevent further complications. Remember, open communication with your partner about any symptoms and potential treatments is also essential for both of your health and well-being.
