Medications for acute urethritis and management considerations?
Hello Dr.
Zhong: I visited the clinic on March 27 due to acute urethritis, where I received an injection of TAITA NO1 250ML, MEIALLIN-C, KETOPROFEN INJECTION, and LINCOMYCIN INJECTION, along with a two-day supply of oral medications including SINCLOCILLIN, UROPYRIDINE, FLAVOXATE, and MAGOCAIN TABLETS.
On March 29, I had a follow-up appointment and received an injection of MEIALLIN-C and CEFAZOLIN 1GM, along with a three-day supply of oral medications including SINCLOCILLIN, UROPYRIDINE, FLAVOXATE, MAGOCAIN TABLETS, and PYRIDOXAL-B6.
I would like to know if these medications could affect my menstrual cycle, as my period is now 9 days late, but multiple pregnancy tests have returned negative (my periods are usually very regular).

The medications you listed have no effect on delaying menstruation.
Essentially, the reason for your delayed menstruation likely stems from a factor that occurred about a month ago (9+14+7 to 10 days = 30 to 33 days) that suppressed your ovulatory function, resulting in the late period.
Please continue to monitor the situation.

The concern regarding the impact of medications used to treat acute urethritis on the menstrual cycle is a common one among patients. In your case, you received a combination of injections and oral medications, including MEIALLIN-C, KETOPROFEN, LINCOMYCIN, SINCLOCILLIN, UROPYIDIN, FLAVOXATE, MAGOCAIN TABLETS, and PYRIDOXAL-B6.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that the medications prescribed for acute urethritis primarily target bacterial infections and inflammation. MEIALLIN-C (a combination of antibiotics) and LINCOMYCIN are antibiotics that help eliminate the infection, while KETOPROFEN is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that alleviates pain and inflammation. The other medications, such as FLAVOXATE and UROPYIDIN, are used to relieve urinary tract symptoms.
Regarding the menstrual cycle, it is important to note that while some medications can influence hormonal balance and, consequently, menstrual regularity, the specific medications you mentioned are not typically associated with significant effects on the menstrual cycle. Antibiotics, for instance, do not usually alter menstrual timing. However, stress, illness, and changes in routine can affect the menstrual cycle, potentially leading to delays.
In your case, the delay of nine days in your menstrual cycle could be attributed to several factors unrelated to the medications. Stress from dealing with an acute infection, changes in your daily routine, or even underlying hormonal fluctuations could all contribute to this delay. It is also worth noting that if your menstrual cycle was previously regular, any sudden changes could be alarming, but they are not uncommon.
If you have conducted multiple pregnancy tests that returned negative results, it is likely that pregnancy is not the cause of your delayed menstruation. However, if your period does not resume soon, or if you experience other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may suggest further evaluation to rule out other potential causes, such as hormonal imbalances or other underlying health issues.
In summary, the medications you received for acute urethritis are unlikely to have a direct impact on your menstrual cycle. The delay you are experiencing may be due to other factors, including stress or changes in your health status. If the delay persists or if you have further concerns, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your healthcare provider can offer personalized guidance and may recommend additional tests if necessary to ensure your overall health and well-being.
