Red Bumps on Inner Lips: Causes, Symptoms, and When to See a Doctor - Dermatology

There are small red spots on the inside of the lips?

I have noticed small red bumps inside my lips over the past few days.
They are quite tiny, and I have more on my upper lip, with just a few on my lower lip.
They feel a bit painful.
Could this be related to my frequent late nights? Should I see a doctor about this?

More Info

Red bumps on the inner lips can be concerning, and it's understandable to want to know the potential causes and whether you should seek medical attention. There are several possible explanations for the appearance of these bumps, and I will outline them below, along with symptoms and recommendations for when to see a doctor.

Possible Causes
1. Canker Sores (Aphthous Ulcers):
- These are small, painful ulcers that can appear on the inner lips and are often round with a white or yellow center and a red halo. They can be triggered by stress, hormonal changes, certain foods, or even a deficiency in vitamins like B12, folate, or iron.

2. Allergic Reactions:
- Allergies to certain foods, dental products, or medications can cause red bumps or swelling in the mouth. If you've recently changed your toothpaste or tried a new food, this could be a potential cause.

3. Infections:
- Viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus, can lead to painful bumps or sores on the lips. If you have a history of cold sores, this might be a possibility.

4. Oral Thrush:
- This is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast, leading to white patches and red bumps in the mouth. It is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems or those who use inhaled corticosteroids.

5. Irritation or Trauma:
- Sometimes, biting your lip or irritation from braces or dentures can cause localized swelling and redness.

6. Lichen Planus:
- This is an inflammatory condition that can affect the mucous membranes in the mouth, leading to white patches and red bumps.

Symptoms to Watch For
- Pain or discomfort in the affected area.

- Changes in the size or number of bumps.

- Presence of white patches or sores.

- Fever or other systemic symptoms, which could indicate an infection.

- Difficulty eating or drinking due to pain.

When to See a Doctor
You should consider seeing a healthcare provider if:
- The bumps persist for more than a week without improvement.

- You experience significant pain or discomfort.

- There are signs of infection, such as fever or pus.

- You have difficulty swallowing or breathing.

- The bumps are accompanied by other symptoms like a rash or fever.

Lifestyle Considerations
You mentioned that you often stay up late, which can contribute to stress and weaken your immune system. Ensuring you get adequate rest, maintaining a balanced diet, and managing stress can help improve your overall oral health. Additionally, practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly can prevent infections and irritations.

Conclusion
While red bumps on the inner lips can be caused by various factors, many of them are benign and can resolve on their own. However, if you are experiencing pain or if the bumps do not improve, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. They can provide you with the best course of action based on your specific symptoms and medical history.
