Is bone density measurement available at your hospital?

I am a cervical cancer patient, and I had a hysterectomy in 1993.
Since then, my follow-up examinations have been normal.
However, I have noticed that in recent years, I often have unexplained bruises from minor bumps.
I would like to ask if I need to undergo a bone density test, and if such medical services are available at Keelung Municipal Hospital.
Thank you.

Lin, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/07/07

Dr. Shi Qiming reply Orthopedics

Hello: There is not much correlation between bruising from collisions and osteoporosis.
This year, Hsinchu Hospital has introduced a new whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) bone density scanner, which can accurately measure bone mineral density.
If you are interested, please contact our hospital's Health Examination Center.
Additionally, for whether Keelung Hospital offers this medical service, we suggest you call and inquire.
Thank you.

Bone density testing, also known as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), is an important diagnostic tool for assessing bone health, particularly in patients who may be at risk for osteoporosis or other bone-related conditions. For cancer patients, especially those who have undergone treatments that may affect bone density, such as chemotherapy or hormonal therapy, monitoring bone health is crucial.

In your case, as a cervical cancer survivor, it is understandable that you are concerned about the unexplained bruising you have been experiencing. While bruising can occur for various reasons, including minor trauma or even certain medications, it is essential to consider that bone density issues can contribute to an increased risk of fractures and other complications. Although the bruising itself may not be directly linked to osteoporosis, it is wise to investigate your bone health further, especially given your medical history.

Regarding the availability of bone density testing at Keelung Hospital, it is advisable to contact the hospital directly to inquire about their specific services. Many hospitals, including those in Taiwan, have begun to implement advanced technologies for bone density measurement, such as the whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan. This test is quick, non-invasive, and provides valuable information about bone density and overall skeletal health.

If Keelung Hospital does not offer this service, they may be able to refer you to another facility that does. It is also worth discussing your concerns with your healthcare provider during your next appointment. They can help assess whether a bone density test is appropriate for you based on your medical history, current symptoms, and any other risk factors you may have.

In addition to bone density testing, there are other factors to consider in maintaining bone health, especially for cancer survivors. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is essential for bone strength. Engaging in weight-bearing exercises can also help improve bone density and overall physical health. If you are experiencing significant bruising or other symptoms, it may be beneficial to evaluate your diet, lifestyle, and any medications you are taking that could contribute to these issues.

In summary, while bone density testing is a valuable tool for assessing bone health, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider to determine if it is necessary in your case. Contacting Keelung Hospital directly will provide you with the most accurate information regarding their services. Taking proactive steps to monitor and maintain your bone health is crucial, especially as a cancer survivor.
