Traumatic impact to the occipital region of the head from a car accident?
I was in a motorcycle accident last week while sitting on the back seat.
I was wearing a helmet, but my head and back hit the ground, with the most significant impact on the back of my head.
I went to see a doctor and it seems I do not have a concussion.
However, for the next couple of days, my neck was very painful and I couldn't turn it much.
Now that my neck has improved, I still feel that my lower back gets sore easily, and I tend to drop things frequently, which never happened before.
Should I see a doctor for this? Thanks.

After a motorcycle accident, it is crucial to monitor your health closely, especially if you are experiencing persistent pain or discomfort. In your case, you mentioned that you were thrown from the motorcycle and landed on your head and back, which can lead to various injuries, even if you were wearing a helmet. While you initially sought medical attention and were told there was no concussion, the symptoms you are experiencing—neck pain, difficulty turning your head, and new issues with your back—are concerning and warrant further evaluation.
Neck pain following an accident can be indicative of a condition known as whiplash, which occurs when the head is suddenly jerked forward and then backward, straining the muscles and ligaments in the neck. Symptoms of whiplash can include neck stiffness, headaches, and pain that may radiate to the shoulders or upper back. Given that you experienced significant trauma to your neck and back, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a specialist in orthopedics or rehabilitation medicine, for a thorough examination.
In addition to whiplash, your symptoms could also suggest soft tissue injuries or even spinal issues, particularly if you are experiencing new difficulties with coordination or dropping items. The fact that you mentioned feeling easily fatigued and having difficulty with tasks you previously managed without issue could indicate that your body is still recovering from the trauma, or it could suggest a more serious underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
It is essential to understand that even if initial imaging studies (like X-rays) did not reveal any fractures, soft tissue injuries can take time to manifest and may not be immediately visible on standard imaging. Conditions such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, or even herniated discs can develop after an accident and may require physical therapy or other interventions for proper healing.
In summary, it is highly recommended that you see a doctor, especially if your symptoms persist or worsen. A healthcare professional can conduct a comprehensive assessment, which may include physical examinations, imaging studies (like MRI or CT scans), and possibly refer you to physical therapy. Physical therapy can be particularly beneficial in restoring mobility, strength, and function to your neck and back, helping you recover more effectively and return to your normal activities, including riding motorcycles.
In conclusion, while it may seem tempting to wait and see if your symptoms improve on their own, proactive medical evaluation and treatment can significantly enhance your recovery and prevent potential long-term complications. Don't hesitate to seek medical advice; your health and well-being are paramount.
