Recommended Oral Contraceptives in the USA: Orthocept vs. Desogen - Pharmacology

Oral contraceptives

I hope to find oral contraceptives recommended by doctors in the USA, specifically Orthocept 28 Days PK or Desogen 28 Days PK.
If these two medications are not available, could you please provide me with a list of oral contraceptives currently available in Taiwan? Thank you.

Stella, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/07/19

Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology

Dear Stella: Upon investigation, both Orthocept and Desogen are contraceptive pills with the same active ingredients.
In Taiwan, contraceptive pills can be purchased at health bureaus, such as Family Planning No.
3, which is affordable (around 20-30 NTD per month) and safe.
Wishing you all the best!

More Info

When considering oral contraceptives in the United States, both Orthocept and Desogen are popular options, each with its own formulation and benefits.
Orthocept is a combination oral contraceptive that contains ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel. It is designed to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to block sperm, and thin the uterine lining to prevent implantation. The typical regimen involves taking one pill daily for 28 days, with 21 active pills and 7 placebo pills. This method is effective in preventing pregnancy when taken as directed and can also help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual cramps, and may decrease the risk of ovarian cysts.

Desogen, on the other hand, also contains ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel, and it works in a similar manner to Orthocept. It is taken in a 28-day cycle as well, with 21 active pills followed by 7 placebo pills. Desogen is known for its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy and can also help with menstrual regulation and reducing acne in some users.

Both medications are generally well-tolerated, but they can have side effects, including nausea, breast tenderness, and mood changes. It's essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine which option may be best for you based on your medical history, lifestyle, and any other medications you may be taking.

If neither Orthocept nor Desogen is available, there are numerous other oral contraceptive options available in the United States. Some alternatives include:
1. Yasmin - Contains drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol.

2. Loestrin - Contains norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol.

3. Alesse - Contains levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

4. Seasonique - Contains levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol, designed for extended-cycle use.

5. Microgestin - Contains norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol.

In Taiwan, the availability of oral contraceptives may differ, but some commonly prescribed options include:
1. Marvelon - Contains desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

2. Yasmin - Similar to its availability in the U.S.

3. Diane-35 - Contains cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol, often used for acne treatment as well.

4. Loette - A low-dose option containing levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

5. Regulon - Contains levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

When choosing an oral contraceptive, it is crucial to discuss with a healthcare provider who can assess your individual health needs and preferences. They can provide guidance on the most suitable options based on your medical history, potential side effects, and lifestyle considerations. Additionally, they can help monitor your health while on the pill and make adjustments if necessary.
In summary, both Orthocept and Desogen are effective oral contraceptives, and there are many alternatives available in both the U.S. and Taiwan. Consulting with a healthcare provider is essential for making an informed choice that aligns with your health goals.
