Hiccup

Hello Dr.
Tsai, I would like to ask if it is normal to burp more than ten times a day (similar to the burps after a meal).
I burp after eating, after drinking water, and even when I haven't eaten anything.
Sometimes, I burp even after just taking a couple of bites of food.
Is this normal?

qì'é, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/08/05

Dr. Cai Jueren reply Family Medicine

Hello, it is normal to burp after eating, but if you are burping more than ten times a day on average, it may be abnormal.
I recommend changing your chewing habits—chew each bite of food at least 30 times before swallowing.
Avoid drinking water while eating, and try to limit the intake of carbonated beverages.
If these changes do not improve the situation, I suggest visiting a major hospital to consult a gastroenterologist.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I hope the above suggestions can help resolve your concerns.
Dr.
Tsai Jue-ren, Hualien Hospital.

Frequent hiccups can be a source of discomfort and concern for many individuals. While occasional hiccups are common and usually harmless, experiencing them frequently—such as ten or more times a day—can indicate an underlying issue that may require medical attention.
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen and plays a crucial role in breathing, involuntarily contracts. This contraction is followed by a sudden closure of the vocal cords, which produces the characteristic "hic" sound. Various factors can trigger hiccups, including eating too quickly, consuming carbonated beverages, or experiencing sudden changes in temperature. However, when hiccups become persistent or frequent, it is essential to consider potential underlying causes.

In your case, experiencing hiccups after eating, drinking, or even when not consuming anything can be concerning. While it may be tempting to dismiss this as a minor annoyance, there are several reasons to seek medical advice:
1. Underlying Medical Conditions: Persistent hiccups can sometimes be a symptom of more serious medical conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), central nervous system disorders, or metabolic issues. If hiccups are frequent and disruptive, it may be worth investigating these possibilities with a healthcare professional.

2. Impact on Quality of Life: Frequent hiccups can interfere with daily activities, eating, and social interactions. If they are affecting your quality of life, it is essential to discuss this with a doctor who can help identify the cause and suggest appropriate treatments.

3. Duration: Hiccups that last more than 48 hours are considered persistent and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Chronic hiccups can lead to complications such as fatigue, insomnia, or even depression due to the constant discomfort.

4. Associated Symptoms: If your hiccups are accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in appetite, it is crucial to seek medical attention. These symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying condition that requires treatment.

5. Lifestyle Factors: Sometimes, lifestyle choices can contribute to frequent hiccups. Stress, anxiety, and certain dietary habits can exacerbate the frequency of hiccups. A healthcare provider can help assess these factors and suggest lifestyle modifications that may alleviate the symptoms.

In conclusion, while occasional hiccups are normal, experiencing them frequently—especially in the manner you described—warrants a discussion with a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic tests, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Based on their findings, they can recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medications, or further referrals to specialists if necessary. Don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor to address your concerns and improve your overall well-being.
