There are small bumps at the vaginal opening?

I recently noticed small, grainy bumps near my vaginal opening while showering.
When I squeezed them, translucent particles came out, and then I started bleeding.
Could this be acne? Also, I would like to ask if having sexual intercourse causes an increase in vaginal discharge.
I tend to experience recurrent infections, although they eventually resolve, but I still have a lot of discharge.
Should I seek further treatment? Thank you!

Hello: It may be folliculitis.
I recommend warm sitz baths, adding one tablespoon of Betadine to the bathwater.
After soaking, dry the area and then apply the ointment for treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Understanding vaginal bumps and their associated symptoms can be quite concerning, especially when they lead to discomfort or bleeding. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a few different issues that could be related to various conditions, including but not limited to cysts, infections, or even sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Causes of Vaginal Bumps
1. Sebaceous Cysts: These are common and usually harmless. They occur when sebaceous glands become blocked. They can appear as small, round bumps and may sometimes release a thick, yellowish substance when squeezed.

2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of hair follicles that can occur in the genital area. It can lead to small, red bumps that may be itchy or painful.

3. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, flesh-colored or gray bumps. They can be mistaken for other types of bumps and may require specific treatment.

4. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): If you have a history of genital herpes, the bumps could be related to an outbreak. This typically presents as painful blisters or sores.

5. Bartholin's Cyst: This occurs when the Bartholin's glands, located at the vaginal opening, become blocked. It can lead to swelling and discomfort.

Symptoms to Watch For
- Bleeding: If squeezing the bump leads to bleeding, it’s essential to avoid this as it can cause irritation or infection.

- Discharge: Increased vaginal discharge can be normal, but if it changes in color, consistency, or odor, it may indicate an infection.

- Pain or Discomfort: Persistent pain, especially during intercourse or while urinating, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the bumps are not causing significant pain or discomfort, sometimes the best approach is to monitor them for changes.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter creams may help with inflammation or irritation. If an infection is suspected, a healthcare provider may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics.

3. Surgical Removal: If cysts or warts are bothersome, a healthcare provider can remove them through minor surgical procedures.

4. Antiviral Medications: If herpes is diagnosed, antiviral medications can help manage outbreaks and reduce symptoms.

5. Regular Check-ups: Given your history of recurrent infections, regular gynecological exams are crucial. This allows for early detection and treatment of any potential issues.

Increased Discharge and Sexual Activity
Regarding your question about increased vaginal discharge after sexual activity, it is common for women to experience changes in discharge due to hormonal fluctuations, arousal, and other factors. However, if you notice a significant increase in discharge that is accompanied by a foul odor, itching, or irritation, it may indicate an infection such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection.

Next Steps
Given your symptoms and concerns, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam, and may take samples for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. This will help in providing you with the most effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

In conclusion, while some bumps and changes in discharge can be benign, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Your health and comfort are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help.
